Better than drunkenly rewinding too hard and knocking the needle flying!

True, I didn't think about that.. although it probably won't be long til laptops and the software are fast enough to load it all quickly. One thing you would want to avoid is putting your usb/external hd in during the last song of the DJ before you... big BURRRR DUM recogintion sound from the laptop!

The argument about CDs being more portable/cheaper if stolen is irrelevant as USB sticks are better in both respects. CDs will definitely disappear before vinyl. I do kind of wish timecoded vinyl was the norm instead of CDJs as that gives an impetus for the turntables to be maintained and yet still allows the benefits of the digital side of things. Benefits both worlds.

regarding compact discs, it's just totally ridiculous to use them tbh.
They are nothing but a hard drive disc that's got an insanely low storage capacity to physical size ratio.
They are a thing of the past. flat little silver discs... That you need to write aprox. 15 or so tracks to, then make a tray card or scribble the information down on the front.
Digital files are digital files, better to store them on an efficient, modern HDD that displays the embedded information on the interface.
Imagine, needing a binder of CD holder leaflets just to carry around a hundred or so digital tracks
and unless you're super organized, you might not even be sure which page or folder is holding what tunes!

Directories in the digital realm with a digital browser it's the only logical way to interface digital files

it's not irrelevant as long as you can't (or don't want to) just plug your usb stick into someone else's laptop and start playing. the people i know, who are using serato etc, don't bring usb sticks, they bring their laptops.

I think he means plugging your USB stick into the CDJ's e.g. the 2000 & 900 model.

As has been mentioned there are CDJs where you can plug USB sticks into them already. One day they'll just stop bothering with the CD part and call them DDJs or some shit. Obviously with Serato it's different but I'm talking about the direct equivalent of using a USB stick with the CDJs rather than a ton of CDs which as Today mentioned above is such an inferior storage device of digital media.

what about those all-in-ones that are basically controllers but you use USBs and you don't need a laptop? seems like there's some potential there

I agree with what some are saying about CDJs in relation to digital and vinyl. Your signal is either analogue or digital, and controllers definitely have an advantage over CDJs in the aspects of finding and storing tracks.

Some people are saying that using a controller looks dumb... which doesn't make sense to me. I've never been to a night before, but was under the impression that it's about the music, not what the DJ looks like.

I don't have much spare cash, but I am interested in learning the art of mixing, and a controller is honestly the fastest, easiest, and cheapest way to get into the hobby. I would absolutely love to have a nice selection of vinyl and decks, but it's too cost prohibitive, not to mention weight/size of vinyl, room that decks+mixer takes up, etc.

EDIT: I know a lot of people dislike anything with a sync button, but what would you say about someone who is mixing by ear and has their sync button remapped to some other function? For example, switching from decks 1/2 to decks 3/4.
