prob not everything but a sizeable amount does based on what i've gathered from interviews i've read with label owners. im too scared to send stuff out as if my stuff is gash they'll prob not want to listen to me again. my stuff aint ready yet anyway

Exactly. I don't know anything about how Burial did it really, but I assume he sent his music in to them in some way or another rather than expecting to trawl Internet backwaters 24/7 in some desperate hope that the next big thing might fart a few minutes of music out onto Soundcloud once every 6 months. Most musicians that "make it" put a fair bit of effort into making sure they make it. It's not something you can really do half-arsed whilst holding down a proper career or getting your Philosophy masters.

Most labels defo listen to quite a lot of stuff they get sent. However, i think they pick and choose based on whos sending their name, track titles etc... i bet they listen to 4 or 5 skip 1 or 2 etc etc.

If you were listening to demos and you got email from artists called 'Actress' or '[*]$aB0tage[*]' ...who you going to skip.

They'll disregard quite a lot i think.

You do realise that burial was like hyperdubs 3rd release, Kode 9 hasnt always been this god like figure lol, they probably just met at FWD or summat.

I think these days aswell, like obviosuly you have to get your tunes to a big DJ or you wont 'make it' but that doesnt mean just sending tunes straight to them. If you just have people slowly lsitening to them, and then it ends up at a big DJ at some point then I spose it can work that way. but like people arent gonna find out about your tracks if they dont get listened to, whether it be on a big youtube channel, magazine/blog or a bigger dj playing it.

I knda like the anonymous thing tho, when its done right as people have said, like that recent unknown release on champion sound or whatever was waste is just trying to get hyped by anon status. I remember when I first heard Joy O and Blawan, it was the fact that there wasnt much info on them that got me even more interested, but it wasnt as if they were wearing a mask or anything, they just didnt have much of an online presence, cos they didnt need it, their tunes were good enough.

I read an interview with Boddika & Joy O in RA and it really sounded like Boddika was Joy's sugar daddy. They make beats in the day, at night they play kind of deelio y'know?

What do you think about people like Helix? and Wanda Group? who make fairly low-key beats and have very "out there" twitter accounts if you get what I mean?

All of that stuff said in the first post influences me absolutly zero...
I listen to music - If I like it I buy it - listen to it - live with it - sometimes for extended periods of time if I really like it - and will look out for the new release
without knowing a single thing about the artist...but

If the artist actually becomes a "real"person - I will like them on an additional level - the level of being a person that I could talk to - hang out with.

Now - If you wanna get into the game of "the seductive mystery" - I dare say that revelation is a huge part of maintaining the intrigue.


I feel the same about "scenes"
If a fan actually feels like they are a part of or could be a functioning part of a scene - with input - that cares...
- they will support more and work for it. They have invested a part of their self to it.

And they should be respected as vital and important.
They aren't just consumers - They aren't just "customers" - That's insulting.

They are witness - They are the third indivisible part of the sacred trinity.

In fact - I dare say

That if you as an artist - infected with the knowledge of the beautiful abstraction
are confident enough in it's singular existence

employ you to not even scribe it to the material.

See how far that kind of arrogance gets you - a million miles in your head I'm sure.

If that's what you're into mr. I take things people say out of context.

I remember reading a long time ago that Burial had been sending tons of stuff to Kode9 for over a year before he did anything with it.

The implication seemed to be that Kode9 had a lot of input as to the final outcome, musically speaking.
