Site Feedback

Post by ERiK » Sun Aug 25, 2013 8:24 pm

I honestly have no complaints about the site so far. I've been here with dubstepforum for a few days and I haven't seen anything to complain about, excepts for this thread:

http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=159713

This guide is not too useful for me. There are way too many broken links that don't help at all.

With the old format (prosilver), which I am still using, I don't see the point of displaying the "Rating: 2.08%" along with the magenta hexagons under the thread title. That is basically saying the number of big ups in each thread as a percentage of the thread on dsf with the most big ups, right? If so, then it will eventually just become an indicator of how long each thread is, because the threads that are 400 pages long will have hundreds of big ups, and all of the new threads will have only a few. So it's pretty much pointless imo because you can get that info from simply looking at how many pages long the thread is. And it's just taking up space. I would get rid of it. It's apparently not in the new "DSF" format.

Any chance of mobile version of the dsf? (m.dubstepforum.com). Similar the the way m.facebook.com and m.bbc.co.uk/news are optimised for phones?

Prosilver works like a charm on the phone.

I think some admin said that the mobile version is very unlikely

Issue with the mobile version is that there is no "uniqe" mobile experience: today we have to support a wide range of devices with a different screen sizes and a different input methods (smartphones, tablets, touchscreens, widescreens and so on), but it's impossible to create custom layout for every screen and device out there.

The solution for this is an adaptive theme, i.e. responsive layout, which shows different layout for different screen size. On smaller displays it will show fewer information and details, on bigger it will show them all. So the same theme will satisfy both, mobile and desktop users.

Prosilver is not even close to the responsive layout paradigm (it's all fixed!), and it's not optimized for a small screens. The main "feature" of not-for-mobile-optimized-sites is "zoom" - when you have to zoom in (pinch-to-zoom gesture) to read default content it only means that the site is not ready for mobile users. This is an essential request for the mobile theme, and that's why we can't and won't make this default style (DSF) behaves like Prosilver. I know you get used to "zooming" on Prosilver, but it's simple a bad habit. (Please, don't shoot the messenger  )

However, you can still help us with suggestions how to improve DSF style for small screen. I know it's not even close to perfection.

Another thing I want to clarify is issue about "too much unused space". I think that we can all agree that empty spaces around text and elements have purpose - it makes site looks cleaner and easyer to read. We can't just put as much as it fits content on a single screen - it will be hard to read and it will look messy. Please read this for example.
There are some problems with alignment of elements and spacing between them and we are aware of this. You can report this kind of issues, but please don't just say: "there is too much unused space". We just can't fill every empty hole because some of them are not always there on smaller screens (they have function to keep elements in order).

The same goes to the line width. Natural line width is below 80 characters (including punctuation marks and empty spaces). When lines get longer, our eyes can easily start crossing and mixing lines. So when we fixed main column on widescreen we have done you a favour so you could read text faster. If you have a really big display, don't maximize browser over whole screen - purpose of big displays is to show more windows at once... not to display whole paragraph of text in just one line.

We've taken into account all other reported issues and we're working to fix them (as you can see ;-) ). Please continue to use this thread for additional comments and suggestions.

It's not exactly work friendly, that's my main issue, my colleagues/manager won't like looking over and seeing me on what looks like a kids site
