whats the score with QUARTZ LOCK? i hear people mix with both decks set to it. how do you mix without changing the speed? or have i got it wrong somwhere.
my mates got some numark decks with something that sounds like this. he said u set the lock and you can change the speed without affecting what the melody sounds like or something like that, didnt quite understand tbh
You can get some decks with digital outputs that can do this sort of thing. They just run a bunch of algorithms on the sound before sending it to the mixer on line level connections. Quartz Lock and the like tends to sound pretty sketchy in my experience, though if you're not pitching the record up or down too much it's ok. Good for all the key mixers out there I guess.

thanks man.

the reason i ask is cos i was readin an article about randall. the author wrote somthing about "randall sliding his quartz locked self into the dj booth and showing em how its done, then after wards, people were asking, 'was he quartz locked'"

still dont get that article.

quartz lock turns the pitch on a turntable off, like putting the slider in the middle.
what you are thinking of is key correction, you get it on some newer turntables like stantons. key correction basically lets you speed up a record without changing the pitch of it (not pitch in the turntable pitch control sense, but musical pitch as in from B flat to C). im not sure why anyone would want to do this, but i suppose it would mean you can match the keys of two tunes and then simultaneously speed up or slow them down.

as for the randall thing, maybe he has pressed some dubs of tracks at the same bpm, like i heard andy c has done. this means that you don't need to bother beatmatching for your dj set, as all the tunes are the same tempo and you can just mix with quartz lock on and not worry about the two records going out of sync. cheating bastard!

i've always wanted to know why garage is called garage, it seems like a pretty stupid name

Well, the quartz lock feature is great if you are going to need to replay a recording at exactly 33 1/3 or 45 RPM with the least possible Wow and Flutter; if this is the case go out and buy yourself a good quality belt drive turntable because the rumble alone which is caused by a Direct Drive Turntable Motor (like on the Technics 1200 / 1210) is far too great for any demanding audiophile. Now on to our point...you are Deejays, and wish to have the greatest amount of control over the platter as possible. When the quartz lock is enabled and the green LED is illuminated, you no longer have control of the platter speed. this is due to the fact that the pitch control variable resistor assembly has been circumvented and the platter speed is now controlled by the constant oscilations of a quartz crystal. Quartz crystals have defined oscilations (vibrations) which are defined by physical laws of the Universe , and their inherant frequencies are used in a wide range of applications in which standards must be maintained, such as computer processor clocks, wristwatches, and direct drive turntable motors. Thus removing, or disabling this Quartz Locking function of the Pitch Control gives you 100% control 100% of the time.

Wiki says:

The light from the sky is a result of diffuse sky radiation which results in a light blue color being perceived by the human eye. On a sunny day the earth sky usually looks as a blue gradient — dark in the zenith, light near the horizon (due to Rayleigh scattering). It can turn a multitude of colors such as purple (especially near sunset and sunrise) and black at night. Scattering effects also partially polarize light from the sky.
