- yes, you can buy a soundcard for a laptop. 'Soundcard' is an old term - most are now external USB or Firewire interfaces.
- You might be able to get a pair of KRK Rokit 6s for around $500. I don't own them, but they're very popular.
- personally, I'd make purchases in the following order: soundcard, monitors, room treatment, sub (if you're still convinced you need it).

I would like to take my producing more seriously and I'm planning to buy studio monitors (Yamaha hs80m). However, since I'm a bit short on budget, I was wondering if it's a bad idea to buy only one monitor and work in mono, and afterwards do the stereo work with my headphones...

What do you guys think of this?

So i've been given a pair of Yamaha MS101 II monitors, by a studio that's upgrading.

Even though their bass response is appalling (nominally 75hz, only flat to about 150) they are way better than the 20 quid creative speakers i'm currently monitoring on, so for now i'll likely be using them, with headphones and the cheap 2.1 speakers to check my bass is how i like it.

Question is, do i now

a) Carry on saving up for a nice pair of KRK RP-5s or similar, and then eventually do b)

or

b) Buy a subwoofer for around £100-£150, then do a)

Option b) means it'll be longer till i have a "proper" monitoring setup, but it'll be much less time till i have something probably very useable (the MS101s+ a sub)

Also, is there any way i'd be able to playback with both the Yamahas and my current 2.1 set at the same time? which would let me use the (admittedly awful) sub from my creatives, possibly with the satellites acting as tweeters?

I think there will be substantial difference.

Although the RP6's are very good, a bigger cone size such as 8" will make the difference in any monitor make. The lows / Low mids will be clearer and the frequency response on the sub frequencies will be a lot better.

I have and love the samson Rubicon R6a's and they sound amazingly detailed with their ribbon tweeter, but they do lack that extra bass you find with bigger cone sizes regardless of the make.

I Wouldn't go for the 8's unless you've got a nice big room mate. You need to have them set back a fair bit away to really get the whole picture out of them. A mate of mine has a set, really great for playing tunes through/mixing etc but as far as monitoring goes they are not flat at all in the lows and sometimes the lag it creates producing sub does some weird things to the sound.

I'd save a little more and reach for a better pair of monitors if I were you. Also try before you buy! can't stress this enough. I was set on buying some RP6's but when I actually went down to the shop and had a listen to a vast range of monitors I couldn't bring myself to wasting £400 on krks, saved up an extra month and went for the Adam A7's and am so much happier.

Lots of people told me same thing. Atm I play in a 2,5m height x 4m width x 10m length room, unfortunately its not splitted and I used to be in a corner with my actual monitor directed to the long wall. Wanna buy a new pair of rokit but dunno if 6 or 8...

Just ordered myself a set of Genelec 8020B's, anyone use these or have any experience on them ? I've had a quick listen to a pair but no shops around my area stock them, but a few of the assistants said they use them themselves, cheers guys !

I'm new here, just ventured into production and have some questions on studio monitors. I'm planning to get these Samson 4" MediaOne but not sure if its good. Anyone been using it? Any pros and cons? Would love to hear some reviews on these pair.

I spent £600 on some Adam A7's. Then I spent £500 on treating my room (it's a 12ft by 8ft bedroom so it's never going to be perfect no matter how much i spend on it.)

before this i used to use a sony hi fi to mix my tunes on. i did this for about 5 years and got mixed results. yes, you probably can mix on a sony hifi if you really know the speakers. but you're giving yourself a handicap.the difference between the hifi speakers and the a7's is fucking night and day. my mixes already sound 10 times better and i'm not even fully accustomed to the a7's yet.

in summary, don't wait half a decade to buy some fucking monitors. just buy them.

p.s if anyone needs any tips about room treatment, soundproofing ect...feel free to pm me (i'm no expert but i'll be able to help total novices).

I have a set of Alesis 620's, with built in limiters and a light that flashes to let you know when the limiter is having to work


my mate has same monitors hooked up to a pioneer mixer, i have mine straight out my on board soundcard in my PC.

I swear his go so much louder than mine and his clipping lights never flash, despite being at the same levels as mine if not louder.

Mine sometimes flash from playing an MP3 with a loud enough bass at full volume (100% on the pc) - i have the volume nobs on the back of the speaker at a notch over halfway.

THE QUESTION: why do my monitors not go as loud without clipping? Is it to do with my signal chain, like do the built in amps have to work too hard from the weak signal coming from my PC or somthing? So they max out quicker?

As you can tell, i have limited knowledge in this area.

Also, too add: my mates speakers are above head height when stood up and like 3 inchs from the wall (if that) - yeh i know thats bad but would that effect precieved volume that much?

if youre only intersted in listening to music, dont get studio monitors mate, get some nice hifi speakers.

Would it be a good temporary solution to use the sub from my Logitech z2300 along side my Adam A5 monitors? Maybe just y-split the audio output from my card to the logitech and the monitors and remove the 2 speakers from the logitech so it is only producing the low frequencies? Sounds applicable but i would like any input. I know the sub is shit but will it do for now?

Edit: Got it all set up as said above... sounds great to my untrained ear! Now i have separate monitor(A5's Stereo Link) and sub(Logitech remote with sub level) controls, as well as a place to plug in headphones to test the mix. Not going to need a different sub anytime soon as i doubt i would even noticec the difference. Maybe the crossover points on an Adam sub would meet perfectly with the Adam monitors, but i'm good for now.
