Not what I expected from Michael Douglas. Great film.

Yeah it doesn't really have lot in common with drive other than gosling and the detail in the pictures.

Right, I was away for a week for work and as there wasn't anything to do in the evenings I watched a lot of films. I'll keep this brief.

Caché
Image
Good film but it raises a lot of questions, not least of which - How the fuck do French people get out of their parking spots in the morning?

High Sierra
Image
Bogart in some bog-standard gangster shit. He's good (as always) but let down by the supporting actors.

Homicide
Image
Good cop turns bad when he decides to help a bunch of Zionist stnuc. Can't really understand why this is in the Criterion collection as it's pretty shit. Too much of the guy who voices Fat Tony in The Simpsons (this didn't help. At all) and not enough William H. Macy.

Magnolia
Image
Seen it before but it's still very good. It's not really about anything in particular but that's not to say it doesn't have a theme. One of those different-individual-stories-intertwine type deals. A really well done look at loneliness, despair, abandonment, deception and death. Strong performances from everyone involved - Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore, shit, even John C. Reilly was good.

The Cincinnati Kid
Image
Steve McQueen wants to be the best stud poker player in the world. Only one man (The man) stands in his way - Edward G. Robinson.
Wicked film with solid acting from the stars and supporting cast. Can't really say more without spoiling it.

Hapkido
Image
You'd think with a name like 'Hapkido' you'd be warranted in expecting to see Hapkido throughout. You'd be wrong - there was maybe four or five moves shown and everything else was Kung Fu. Screwin. Not even Sammo Hung could save this lacklustre, anti-Japanese bore fest.

Life of Pi
Not even worth the movie poster. Fucking. Yawn.
Sentimentality for the sake of it. The 'message' of the film could have been put across in maybe four minutes. Might have been better if I was on a come-down and/or insanely stoned/recovering from a lobotomy/suffering from dementia/a child/someone who was in between an orchidectomy and receiving appropriate HRT. Avoid.

It's pretentious beyond belief.

Watched Silver Bullet. It made me really nostalgic for a certain era and style of movie and it's a werewolf movie so I enjoyed it. Beyond that it doesn't offer a whole lot.

Purple Rain

Hmm. I don't think this has aged wonderfully, but it's decent. Great music sequences and just about good-enough in betweeny bits to keep you watching. A million times better than Moonwalker, but that's not saying a huge amount.

Just watch if you fanny. Do you need all your mates to tell you what you should listen to and how to dress aswell?

I think most people go in expecting Drive 2 and its not.
Alot of people that have seen Refn talk about it mention how he made it to piss off people that latched onto him after Drive, his way of "shaking off the fleas" so he ramps everything that folks liked in Drive to the enthdegree just because he can.

Lol they just stare at each other (in Drive) Well fuck you then were going to stare even more here and Gosling can have 10 lines in the whole film.
He makes them cheap becuase hes then free to do whatever he wants, aslong as he breaks even then hes content.

Also re the end,Everyone in the film is mental and also a tnuc. He smashes someone in the face with a glass and drags them out of a club by their mouth. Just because.

Even looking at the thread everyone goes in expecting Drive. When Drive is nothing like anything he had previously made. Valhalla Rising is nothing like Drive either? Pusher triolgy is about as close to it that hes done
OST is good too.

TDLR: Its not perfect by any stretch, but its also worth watching. It looks and sounds great wich is more than you can say for most other films that people waste 2 hours of their life watching!

Not disagreeing but honestly if you have to spend this much time making a person believe it's good then is it actually?
Or is this just one big chin stroking cry wank?

Im not trying to make him belive its good EH, just It annoys me when people disregard things based off other peoples opinions of stuff. Its just lazy to me.

If you saw the trailer and thought "Not for me" and never said another word, thats fine!
But to have intrest due to previous work, then have your opinion formed by other people, then bash it after not even having seen it is not so much.

Also Im really bored at work so I can happily make huge posts abotu things I like, makes me look busy!

I actually ignored that part of your post in making my post.
Valid point in the right context.

I would not ignore a movie based off of my friend's opinions.

It's not just friends opinions. It's also a vast number of critics who I normally follow and respect giving long in depth analysis on why it fails on every aspect apart from being shot well. It's a lot of time and effort to try and find somewhere to watch what I'm already 90% sure will just be a pretentious drive clone that has no plot, character development or purpose beyond "they're crazy and violent and my movie looks nice"

I'm just not gonna watch it. Sorry.

Ah what, your the last person on here that Id have expected to listen to critics! Anyway its on VOD (itunes and shit) which is how I saw it. Anyways there we go!

Saw The Worlds End last week, probably the least funny of the three (Shaun of the Dead/Hotfuzz and this) but it was good and the ending was not what I expected atall.

Well this is a thread about movie discussion, can't blame for someone saying maybe you should watch it and form your own opinions rather than rely on critics and everything else.
Hell just the divided opinions about it in this thread would be enough to pique my interest if I hadn't watched it.
