That sort of attitude is probably why you didn't enjoy the film.Laszlo wrote:tldr

I'm glad you enjoyed it but everything it achieved (or tried too) has been done before and better. For this reason, to me, it felt (almost offensively) spoon-fed and somewhat lacking. I very much enjoy subtle portrayal of characters without the need for heavy scripts, the top of page 474 is an excellent example, but Drive just failed to impress me.wolf89 wrote:Everything seems incredibly deliberate in the film and honestly the only way it could seem hollow is if you're not thinking about it enough or expecting some huge action movie or something heavy on plot rather than a more subtle portrayal of characters and style based exploration of subjects rather than being dependent on script.

See that just confuses me all the more. I mean you clearly like movies like that if you enjoy Kitano's films like Hana-Bi

Enjoyed this one!
Re: Secret Ninja Movie Club (aka what have you watched latel
10/10 film. I don't give perfect scores out willy nilly either.
I watched Drive the best part of two years ago so my memory is not really fresh, I just seem to remember Gosling coming across as a bit retarded rather than a 'strong, silent' type. So yeah, my argument is kinda exhausted but i'll just say that i'm a fan of 'man with no name films', noir/neo noir AND love stories. From memory, Drive takes aspects of them and spits it out. The spit does look good, but it's still spit.

I dunno, maybe it's because it had a lot of hints to genres of film I watch a lot outside of those (like I mentioned with Exterminator). I understand that with Gosling to be honest, it wasn't until a bit into the film that I got used to him in it but I think a lot of that was from my previous dislike for him as an actor.
Don't want to start this debate again but the reviews for Only God Forgives basically are what you said about drive but instead actually referencing drive as the good film and Only... as the pleasant looking missing the point crap

Ah ok. I can understand that aspect of it - sort of why I enjoy the Kill Bill films more than most, because I get the nods and winks to certain Kung Fu/samurai films.wolf89 wrote:I dunno, maybe it's because it had a lot of hints to genres of film I watch a lot outside of those (like I mentioned with Exterminator).
I'm definitely going to watch Drive again at some point. Hopefully i'll get more from it a second time around.

I hated Kill Bill because it's just cut and paste scenes from other films I have on DVD done in a corny way.Laszlo wrote:Ah ok. Meh, like I say, swap 'Kill Bill' for Drive and 'scenes' for concepts.wolf89 wrote:I hated Kill Bill because it's just cut and paste scenes from other films I have on DVD done in a corny way.Laszlo wrote:Ah ok. Hoping this is good too, unsure how it would work over like a full feature length!aspect-dubz wrote:

Nah because Kill Bill literally lifts scenes and bits of music and some lines of dialogue from other movies. It's one of the least original movies I think that's ever been made. It also happens to rip off a lot of Asian movies which when done by an American nerd comes off as super cheesy and lame.Laszlo wrote:Meh, like I say, swap 'Kill Bill' for Drive and 'scenes' for concepts.wolf89 wrote:I hated Kill Bill because it's just cut and paste scenes from other films I have on DVD done in a corny way.Laszlo wrote:Ah ok. I fucking hate most Tarantino if I'm honest.

Nah because Drive literally lifts concepts and stylistic overtones and lack of dialogue from other movies. It's one of the least original movies I think that's ever been made. It also happens to rip off a lot of Western movies which when shown to a Western audience comes off as lazy, unimaginative and a little offensive.
At least Tarantino was introducing Asian cinema to a Western audience unable/unwilling to read subtitles.
