So as many of you may know Skrillex's latest EP is fucking musicans and music fans alike right off due to the title track being seemingly inspired by Burials very unique and definitive style of future garage. Both fans and haters of Skrillex seem to be responding badly to the new songs and the title track in particular.
Ever since Skrillex has become the poster boy (at least in america or for those who are not well versed in underground bass music) of dubstep, hate has followed from people who dont like the abrasive/metal-like nature of Brostep as well as fans of earlier veins of dubstep who feel like the brand of brostep produced by skrillex is a complete bastardisation of a genre or style that was genuinely innovative and fresh from 2000-2005 and still is in amongst the less popular (in terms of record sales) artists in both North America and the UK.
I just feel as though personally, although i dont like to listen to Skrillexs music, he seems like a genuinely nice person and where people see him as ripping off or biting a fresh sound and using it for personal gain as well as destroying or tainting the musics image amongst the mass population (who now associate the term dubstep with brostep by and large) i think hes just a man who enjoyed the more harsh tones of dubstep and fused them with other styles he liked, i think he was in a punk/rock band as well, and released music that he wanted to hear. This latest release has angered many people because of the blatant Burial influence and lets face it, especially on this forum Burial is seen as a influential, innovative almost godlike figure, deservedly so IMO. However the song in question is clearly way below par if it is being compared to Burials tunes especially the ones off his debut. And its important to remember Skrillex has used vocal manipulations and sample manipulations as main melodies on many of his tracks its not like he heard Untrue and then jumped on Fruity Loops...
There are many reasons which are understandable to 'hate' on Skrillex's music and the way he goes about marketing his brand and the way he conducts his live shows (making it increasingly less about music and more about fancy lights etc etc) however it just seems like a fruitless exercise to heap all this negative energy on him for two main reasons. I think that in any underground movement or community ( i still consider the real innovative and exciting artists of this scene like Wen and Damu in particular to be relatively underground) its important to focus on being positive and supporting each other to support the style and its mutations . Dont get me wrong i think that most people especially on this forum are wonderful and help each other, give feed back on tunes, gear etc so its stupid to hate someone who really isnt affecting what is going on in the important circles of the scene that is dubstep.
Also if youre talking shit about something, its still creating publicity for that thing, so if you hate it and you tell people about it its a contradiction because more people are going to know of it and possibly listen to it because of your statement that it/he is shit. I think its better to just not buy his records or go to his shows if you dont like it, i feel thats a better statement of your discontent with his music than saying "what the fuck is this shit, trying to rip off burial, youre a tnuc, go back to making wub wub wub you dick" or something along those lines.
Stay positive and leave him alone as if he cares anyway hes probably rolling in cash by now the tnuc...
