Elysium.

Good but not great. Visually stunning: some of the CGI work was the best I've seen. As we know the graphic design and creativity is never a problem for Blomkamp: the weapons, vehicles and droids look stunning. There's some good gore there too.

But the leads simply do not carry the movie: Matt Damon but also Sharlto Copley do not fare well for me (Jodie Foster and William Fichtner do better jobs). As we knew from beforehand, illegal immigration and now also healthcare are predominant themes, it got boring real fast and the ending sequence really baffled me: they don't offer up a very plausible solution at all, in fact, the heroes actions would do the opposite for Earth. I think they didn't think that one through. Also, I had expected more powerful action scenes with the bionic suits and some of the action scenes were shot Michael Bay style, which deffo isn't for me.

Of all the sort of sci-fi blockbuster movies of the year, it still is probably the best for me. Again the visuals and creative department worked wonders, but the movie and plot are a bit smarter than say World War Z or Pacific Rim. Recommended for a cinema watch but I'm affraid it wasn't that memorable. Let's see what Gravity can do later on in the year.

Das Experiment (2001)

Taken me a while to get round to this - relentlessly visceral, but intriguing and occasionally pretty disturbing. Makes me want to see a prequel about the scientists who designed the experiment.


Dogtooth (2009)

HOLY FUCK. Brilliantly imagined, made and acted, but HOLY FUCK.

Breach

Seen it before, still a cracking watch IMO. Forgot the guy who played President Palmer in 24 was in it.


3:10 To Yuma

One of the better 'modern' westerns I've seen, need to rewatch the original to see if it still holds up


Heat

Classic, appreciated the Van Zant subplot a lot more this time round. Also stars the guy who plays President Palmer in 24, strangely enough.


Parker

It's a Statham action film, you know what to expect. Statham gets double crossed by Bunk Moreland and Vic Mackey. Less OTT than Crank, less serious than Transporter. Jennifer Lopez works surprisingly well as comedy relief.


The Losers.

Never read the comics, so not sure how close an adaption this is. Gloriously OTT action film that comes over like a poor mans Watchman/Sin City/A-Team hybrid. Idris Elba does a good job, Jeffrey Dean Morgan feels like he's running through a Comedian blooper reel, Chris Evans manages to be even more obnoxious & annoying than the first Fantastic Four movie. Wouldn't recommend going out of your way for, but if it's on and you want some stupid background explosions, there are worse out there.
