SOUND Proofing your Apartment!?

Post by yamaz » Thu Aug 06, 2009 3:00 am

Ok so I'm moving from a house to an apartment and would like to block out some sound so I can keep on producing, ya dig? ;)

I've looked up a few things, including sheetrock, green glue but I dont want to change the construction of the room.

Is there a way to isolate sound better through your floor in particular? Heavy rugs, mass loaded vinyl, or something else?

Are there any other acoustic elements that I should consider, like foam I can place on the walls or ceiling to help block out the sound?

Thanks!

simply... no

you'll have to build, and you'll have to make the space airtight to keep sound in

get some headphones

You need mass and density, to separate everything from everything else, and to control all flanking paths to get any decent results.

so in short, no.

i wrote a thing out about acoustics on here once, im an acoustic consultnat by trade.

i recommend u make your sound proof room in pieces so when you get kicked out you can take it with you.
other recommendations
cheapest materials can be found at your local home depot

and i recommend you jack it up and put a large ultility strap around it like a seat belt but way tighter clink clink clink... this helps hold the walls tighter than a metaphor im not gonna use...
imagine the room like a glass of beer one hole equals all the beer leaking out. A small circulation vent is required tho
:s: :s: :s:

alternating studs on base plates cut down the center can be used to separate vibration(if you plan to use wood)
fire code dry wall layered and few other tings.

My studio engineer recons, the cheapest way to do it is to.

Make a frame out of 2x2 wood.
Fill the frame with rockwool
Plaster board over the frame.
And add carpeted floor tiles with groves in the fabric over the plaster board.

But its alot of hassel to go to, and he says if you have crap door or window in the room its all a waste of time anyway.

I decide not to bother and ended up getting kicked out 12 months later :(

rockwool, carpet etc will absorb sound, and hence improve internal room acoustics. It wont stop noise going next door. Mass and density is what stops noise (and other things such as resilient couplings etc described in that other thread).

The one described above will help if completely covering a wall or whatever, but sound acts very much like water ie it will find the path of least resistance/leak out of any available sound. A 4 foot thick concrete wall with a window will only have a sound insulation performance marginally above the performance of the glass, or more realistically, the frame and the seals.

In short, sound insulation is hard to improve retrospectively unless you can do serious works.

The most simple way to sound proof your apartment ....

.... I never get any complaints.

1. Move to your new flat.
2. Install the largest sound system you can afford.
3. Play loud intermittently until the police / environmental health arrive
4. Deny everything.
5. Repeat steps 3/4 till your neighbors move out.
6. Live in peace and harmony. :0)
