Migration 001

Post by lowpass » Thu Aug 06, 2009 2:48 pm

has anybody else had any issues with this release?

I got it through the other day and it was majorly crackly on both sides, so I contacted chemical and got it sent back and replaced,

just got the replacement through the other day and it's not that much healthier than the one,

is it just coincidence that I got a duff copy both times or are there more out there that are like this?

also is there any chance that it's static related and not dirt/dust? if so what could be done to cure it?

This release was accidentally mastered by the wrong engineer (which won't be happening again!) which is probably why its not quite as polished as usual. I thought the vinyl was a tad quiet and theres a bit of crackling I didn't think it was bad enough to get the metalworks redone, that sort of thing is always a problem with vinyl unfortunately. Its not the best cut ive ever had done but its not nearly the worst either, too late to do anything about this release but I'll get tunes redone in future if I get a problem like this again the last thing I want is unhappy customers!

Theres a bit of surface noise but I still think the vinyl still sounds nice I don't think the noise is that bad its been worse on other releases b4, I didn't notice it much until u 2 mentioned it I don't think its much of a problem really. I'd prefer to have had my usual engineer on the case but I was still happy enough with the vinyl as it is. I'll deffo keep an ear out for surface noise in future though, if its any help I can send you the digital files?

Yeah the crackle aint normally an issue itself but yeah when combined with a quiet track you really bring the noise floor up when your cranking that gain.

do you run migration? and the digital files would be great, would you be able to pm me them?

finally, this release is still opening (ninja) and closing (guns) my set tonight just have to hope people don't notice the crackle too much

:)

Yea I run Migration I also run Sour Grapes and I'm starting a 3rd label called Sub Horizon with for the real deep subby stuff more info on that soon, I'll send you the files thats no problem mate. I think your right about the noisefloor - the gain is 2-3db less than I usually have it which probably means the noisefloor is twice the volume it usually is so more noticable in the intro/outros but unlikely to be noticed in the mix. I didn't think the lower volume was an issue when I approved the TPs - lots of ppl prefer quieter cuts and theres the whole loudness war debate etc but I'm sold now on loud (hairy not overcooked) vinyl to be honest, the whole dynamics argument seems pointless with vinyl as background noise is so loud anyway and its no coincidence that it takes more skill to get a louder cut as any ME will tell u.

I'll make sure Shane does all the future releases it was only by accident he didn't do this one I was still happy enough to put it out though. There were no pitching problems which often happens (hole not in the centre/warping issues etc) and although the noise is a bit loud it arguably adds a bit of character and was subtle enough that everyone who heard the TPs just assumed it was dust off the needle. All I can say is that anyone who hears the vinyl and thinks the noise is a problem should get the digital version instead they should be in beatport very soon.

I know what you mean, I was just thinking the other day about how vinyl is still free from the loudness war, I'm gonna try and just spin ninja scrolls from where the beat kicks in, it's not so quiet there.

What else do Migration have lined up then? anything to beat 001?

Check out the homepage:

http://www.myspace.com/migrationrecordings

MIGRAT002 is very heavy compared to the other stuff on the label there's my new tune "What u gonna do" and Numbernin6's remix which is pure filth! I've not even uploaded the remix yet but its on Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep8K2DsqYEA

I'm working on the A-Side for MIGRAT003 at the moment its a bit like a dubby version of Midnight Request Line not ready to upload it yet though. There's some other tunes from Numbernin6 and HXDB in the pipeline as well I'll upload audio soon. If your into the deep stuff you should check out Sub Horizon as well I'll be using tunes from the 1st and 2nd releases in a couple of mixes I'm doing in the next few days I'll start a thread when I done the recordings.

Yea its only REALLY noticeable in the intro and quiet part, it just so happens that is my favourite part of the track :D

Yea I think the whole dynamics debate is pointless in dubstep considering that these tracks are made for a dancefloor and you would notice if there was dynamic inconsistencies in the track or from one track to the next (notice in a bad way).

If it was a cut of some Mozart or something then dynamics would be important but the objective of an ME or cutting engineer in dance music is to achieve punchiness and a loud record IMO, leave the loudness war to audiophiles and their thousand pound hi-fi setups :D

(thanks for the files  )

Nice one I'm trying to move on to the deeper stuff, Makes a nice change from listening to hyper dubstep after jumpup after wobbler. I'll keep my eye out for Sub horizon.

That what you gonna do track is evil, numbernin6 doesn't pull any punches on his tracks eh?

Thanks for the digital copies, I always try to get the digital version of my vinyls but couldn't find these anywhere, looking to get a good response tonight from both these tracks :)

I'd have been more annoyed if there was a wavery pitch problem than with the extra noise especially with those pads in the Guns @ Dawn intro. I really doubt anyone would notice the noise in a club but go with the digital masters if you prefer the cleaner mix, I still think the vinyl sounds better than the wav despite the noise though. You 2 are definately hard customers to please lol but I appreciate you noticing something was out of the ordinary with the release and I'll make sure the volume is louder in future - noise will always be a problem with vinyl but at least if the mix is louder then its less noticable

I think beatport are uploading the digital masters right now - Guns @ Dawn is on there Ninja scrolls should be on there later today. Your right Numbernin6 can smash it but he's also got a very deep melodic sound as well, the other tunes on the label are completely different to that remix it shows just how diverse his sound is - I'll post some other tunes of his asap.
