New format for digi dj's

Post by hellfire machina » Fri Aug 14, 2009 1:59 am

THIS ISN'T A DEBATE ABOUT DIGI VS VINYL SO PLEASE DO NOT MAKE IT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!

I know of at least 2 reputable sample pack companies and several labels that are developing this product at the minute and wanted to hear your opinions on it.

Rather than buying an mp3/wav/flac of a whole track, the plan is to make tracks available broken down into parts, ie drums/atmos/percussion/vocals/bass/leads etc etc.

To be used with programs such as Ableton Live.

This will give you much more creative freedom with digital performance, and open a world of endless possibilities.

Personally I welcome it......

What do you guys think?

I've already heard of something very similar, someone did a release where they supplied the parts to make up the song. i bet its been done multiple times.

i think it sounds interesting, but time consuming, but probably the future as we stop playing songs and start just straight mixing riddims with textures on computers etc.

I think one of the positive things to come out of it will be music formatted purely for dj's to use for performance.

Hopefully this will mean that artists will create music purely for listening as well as music to be played out.

It will certainly up the game too, if you have the capability to create unique versions of tracks each time you play it'll make the party goers experience that little bit more special and in turn will showcase the performers talent beyond that of the conventional dj skills.

I envisioned this happening years ago, we probably all have. I don't really have any problem with it. I think it would depend on who participates in this and who doesn't. If it became big it could totally change the game. I kinda don't see it taking off tho. I dunno.

With sample pack companies getting on it, I can envision it forcing the hand of labels to follow suit, otherwise they will be missing out on a potential new and very lucrative market and will also lose support from digital dj's.

We're doing a sample pack at the minute and we have been asked to include mini tunes broken down into parts for this reason.

I'm thinking heavily about doing it with all of our future releases too.

If music is your career, it seems like a good stream of revenue for the near future as well as allowing dj's to put their own twist on your work in a live situation.

As Abz said, it could totally change the game.

Well to me it's success would depend on the potential financial reward. For instance if it was to be sold for 10 dollars a track rather than the standard 2 per that we are seeing now. And the fact that you could possibly give the full unseperated tune away for promotion. Seenings as how only a small fraction of digital tunes as it is is actually purchased anyway. That way I could see the incentive for me myself doing a track that way. But the stems would probably be pirated too so who knows.

Sounds like a pretty cool idea, im definitely not against it, and when artists release this kind of material its quite cool to give people a chance to do remixes etc.

On the downside, If i were an artist I would be a little hesitant with what I would release as there could be some real idiots out there doing atrocious shit to your music, which wouldnt be so cool. Then again if you didnt know it was happening it couldnt hurt you.

Definitely depends, who is willing to sell their tracks likes this and how much they are willing to participate I guess. I seem to think it would already be popular by now if there was enough interest in it as there are already plenty of songs available in seperate track formats.

While yes having stems for a track would be awesome from a production point of view but in my eyes it will seriously comprimise a tracks integrity in a DJing context.

I dont want someone potentially removing parts of a tune which I have worked hard on creating when they play, yes it may allow for some nicer transitions or a different sound to a track that a crowd might not be expecting but ultimatly you are exposing all the elements of your tune.

This concept certainly has its Pro's and Con's...

It would be interesting as a creative tool and imagine some ppl will get very good at it, but you know as ever you will find rythmn's that just don't fit together and it kind of undermines the nature of a producers job to write a tracks that express's a feeling.

Certainly not going o turn my nose up pat it, but would have to see ow it works practically.

I couldn't see it being massively popular with producers tbh.

sounds like a lot of HARD WORK for the dj... why are they trying to make so difficult to be a dj, and why do I have to make a unique mix everytime I want to listen to a track?

Some interesting points raised for sure.

I think it will encourage producers to make some tunes specifically for performance use and some specifically for listening. The thought of this excites me greatly.

As for it making more work for the dj, that's kinda the point to push the envelope. The dj's that want the easy route will stand out like a sore thumb and those putting in that extra effort with their performance will reap the rewards from doing so.

Sounds like a heavy idea, if there was a way to do this for say mastering aswell, it would give the engineer alot more flexibility (slightly off topic but im thinking advanced apps), on the other hand, it would be a hell of a lot easier to sample tunes if they are seperated, although people will sample regardless of the state the tune comes in.
