Being nice....does it matter?
Being nice....does it matter?
"....'s a nice bloke"
insert Elemental, Western Synthetics, Seven, Mala or whoever
Does it matter that a producer who plays out is a good bloke?
í.e. friendly, outgoing, not up themselves.
Everyone I met earlier on made me feel, in conrast, egotistical and grumpy
but now I'm feeling relatively nice.
Has the worldwide steppa community fractionated so much
that fuckwits can act out & nobody cares?
I don't mean antics or putting on a show,
I mean being precious, greedy or big-headed.

Not to be preachy, but I believe in positivity and good manners. I'm sure I often fall short of my own aspirations, but I was raised to treat others with respect, and it's really helped me out a lot in life... I think it goes without saying that if you are a nice person, then people will be that much more willing to work with you, your music will get more exposure, etc. But more than this I think that all music has a message, intentional or not... every piece of music makes you feel a certain way, and I would rather hear tunes made by someone who feels the same way about the world as me, rather than, say, someone who enjoys punching people in the face...
You mentioned Mala- I loved his music before I ever knew anything about him, but after reading his interviews and hearing his inside out show for redbull music academy, his tunes are that much more special because they were made by such a radiant human being, whom I hope to have the pleasure of meeting some day. In contrast, I recently met an artist whose music I don't think I will ever be able to enjoy again because it will always remind me of the foul person behind it. Personality goes a long way...

mala is like the john lennon of dubstep, ever calm, he justs has good karma in him... nothing but respect for him, his tunes are sophisticated, deep, emotional & dark a bit like burial in some aspectsMittens4Kittens wrote:Not to be preachy, but I believe in positivity and good manners. I don't know why Burial doesn't play out, but I would imagine it has something to do with wanting to avoid the ego trap that is associated with DJ'ing... I think Data really got it right with the sample on "Leaves" http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/se ... k=TEMPA044

generally speaking I tend to assume that people that aren't sound aren't really part of the scene anyway, but then again I've never met anyone who's big or anything so this is more about punters at raves and stuff. Always seems like the people who are really into it are really sound always and the people who aren't are the people who get the hell in my way and look moody when I'm trying to skank :p

I like my producers the same way I like my women: cold, sullen and morose. :'|
On a serious note, though, I mean, who gives a fuck, really? Apart from if they do something to personally fuck you over or disrespect you, of course...you can't expect everyone to be nithe.

I also believe in "do unto others"
There is a phrase I have heard a lot in the music industry (I am sure it's used elsewhere also) which is:
"You see the same people on the way up as you do on the way down"
Implying be nice to everyone, no matter how successful you are, because you will see them again and they may be in a better position than you. I have seen this firsthand too, I have seen interns of mine go onto great success, I have seen producers and rappers who are slated to be the next big thing fall off because they burned a bridge too many or can't get their shit together.
To be honest, I am surprised anyone would ask this question. I feel like if you were raised to treat people with respect, this is second nature to you, and if you weren't raised that way, it will probably never be important.
What do I know though?

It's nice to be important, but it's important to be nice
