Creating music with a computer is not real music

Post by Sinus Sawtooth » Mon Sep 14, 2009 12:17 pm

I HATE PEOPLE WHO SAY THAT!

moron: so you make music? what instrument do you play?
me: err... I play the Laptop?
moron: oh you use magix music?
me: yeah something like that...
moron: thats not real man, thats just easy, you let the computer do all the hard work?
me: well, actually it's a bit harder...
*gets interupted*
moron: no, it easy... real musicians master an instrument...
me: yeah well, I mastered fruity loops and my GAZILLION synths...
moron: still, it's fake man, making music with the computer is too easy, everybody can do that
me: flabbergasted

thinking about buying a guitar, learning to play it, go back to that dude, play him some music on my new guitar and then kill him with my new guitar...

I play bass guitar, I'm pretty sure its an instrument, I'm pretty good at it.

I've tried two or three times to produce, even on something simple like fruity loops. Still can't.

Nahh just take a print screen of a finished track you did in fruity loops with loads of automation in the playlist and ask him if hed ever be able to do that easy. The sight of a packed playlist in FL will surely shut him up.

When people press me on which specific instrument I play I just tell them drums, guitar, bass, synth and percussion
what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.

I used to think the same as this guy. Then I learned music and that soon cured my ignorance

ask the moron if he can manipulate a waveform in such a way that it produces low frequency bass that could in theory make him shit his pants? seriously can his claranett do that? Me thinks not.

My mother ! Always on about certain 'music' not being music. I'm pretty sure her entire listening library focuses on JUST Steely Dan though, so she's not worthy of an opinion.

Throw a bunch of fancy technical stuff about Fourier synthesis and ASDR filtering at him.

I am guilty of thinking this back when all I would listen to was metal and play guitar all day
Until I tried producing some DnB, and then I was like "FuuUUUUUUUU"

I honestly used to think the computer did all the work in my ignorance.
Gave up on DnB as soon as I first heard dubstep then I went to college a couple of years ago now to do Music Technology and here I am producing dubstep, and i love it :D

when i was in my teens, used to play drums in a doom gothic metal band and a few months ago started producing, the thing is, at producing, you depend just on yourself and in a band there are huge problems with coexistence and sincronising all the band members, excluding this, is as hard doing a track sitting in front of your computer as making a track with instruments

truth is though that you can't play an instrument, you can arrange things and edit them in a computer program, you didnt make that sine wave.. the programers who made fruityloops did all that, you just drew out a note and probably put an lfo on it.

i on the other hand have been playing the drums and guitar for years, so when people ask i say i play those.. and make tunes on a laptop

I can play the QWERTY Piano :-P

Nah, tbh, I played guitar when I was a kid, never continued it because I think the guitar is boring, I mean, it's a guitar... it will always be a guitar, I can make guitarish sounds, I can fuck it up with effects and stuff, but it's still a guitar... it's limited... all these instruments are limited... I don't like limits.

Famous classical composers created music on sheets before ever touching an instrument. I guess the paper and ink did all the REAL work, lol.

People get creation/composition and performance mixed up all the time. Anyone who plays music from ANY GENRE, will find on their first trip to a proper studio, that computers will be the #1 "instrument".

That's not fair really. If you're making all your patches from scratch (which you ought to be) you've got to understand synthesis and there's a lot of skill in that. Drum programming also takes a lot of skill if you're going to do it with any complexity and subtletly. So does editing and arranging samples. Capo Ultra is right - you're playing a whole load of different instruments.

Granted, it's a different set of skills from playing a traditional instrument but I find it a lot easier to tear off a bit of guitar for my band than I do to compose and arrange a whole tune from scratch using Logic.

If you do it unimaginatively and use presets to create sounds you're no less of a musician than someone who plays clichéd licks on a guitar that he's ripped off other people's songs.
Hit that long lunar note and let it float ...
