whats the worst djing experience youve ever had?

Post by laurent__duval » Sat Sep 19, 2009 12:41 am

as the title suggests, whats you're worst experience?

just been to a party and played and it was a total shambles! spent 2 hours waiting for some screamo bands to finish and pack away, then 30 minutes in the bass bin blew. disaster...

anybody else?

worst dj experience? projekt festival.

i didnt play, but i was experiencing the dj's.

it was suppose to be a 4 day festival, but got shut down after like 6 hours, because of incompetence of the promoters and them getting wrong permits. dipshits

....and skream didnt play because he had food poisoning

this wasnt really disastrous at all but we had an outdoor party with like 200 people, tshirts, drug piñata, and a serious reputation to hold up. we decided using this non grounded extension cord was a fine idea and a 10x10 pop up tent would do the job. then it started POURING

so we had like 8 feet of tarp enclosing about 30% of the tent sides and im rolling, cold, wet, leaning over my laptop and half a turn table to stop the rain MISERABLE while dj bloom spins electro for about 60 kids having a mud rave LOL.

so i step up to the decks, in my wet shoes, touch the turn table, and get shocked. bloom, dry as hell, continued spinning. a sloppy spinback breaks a needle... well that was that, had to shut her down!

nothing got damaged somehow ... except 1 needle

i knocked the needle once and also lifted the needle on the wrong deck after a mix on the same night. was just and off night but at least the crowd were too smashed to really care

nothin drastic yet, just things like the sound going out, or a grand total of THREE people showing up, not including other dj's.

My worst experiance happened in LAB in bristol when i used to play off MP3 CD's so i didn't have to carry so many cd's round with me. I'd phoned ahead to check what equipment i was useing and the promotor assured me it it was a pair of CDJ 800's so no problems there, untill the dj before me puts on his last tune i go to sue up my first tune and find out there MK1's which don't play MP3's had to do the 2 hour set from my set of old emergency CD's! I stopped using MP3's that day!

at this party last night, we ended putting the decks on an old door resting on 3 chairs (not stable) and the whole rig was coming out of 1 plug. there were 2 screamo band playing before so the party was half emo kids half rudeboys. almost everyone was asking if i had any new caspa or rusko (not at all what i play). so i had to play what little jump up stuff i have. i've got serato and considered going home to get it but my firend talked me out of bringing my laptop into the house.
after 30 minutes for no reason (though probably something to do with the massive overloading of the plug) the bass cab popped and that was that. i tried to carry on whilst my mate, who owns the system, tried to fix it. meanwhile a group of rudeboys turned up with some jump up dubstep and started trying to get behind the decks. so i sacked it off and left.

not good.

leaving my carts after my set last night for the other dj's to use, fingers crossed they're alright...

played a gig the other day where one of my cartridge's skipped badly for about three records, throwing me right off, then snapped completly, skidding across my copy of earth run red carving some lovely chunks out of it. changed the cartridge, carried on, but there was something extremely dodgy about the sound, really couldnt figure out what from where i was. next time i played i found out the mixer only had bass and high eq's so when i thought i was cutting/boosting the bass, i was actually messin with the pan, hence the absolutely shit sound. not sure if thats my worst but def fresh in the memory :partridge:

LOL . .. I've had 2 that really compete for the worst.

1 . Prob the worst was this summer. It was traumatic, and I hate talking about it.
My band was supposed to play a show @ this bar in las vegas (I play drums inna dub band) and the keybdist took off, n couldn't do the gig. So , I called the promoter a week before and told her I still want the slot but no band would be playing, and I'll do a live Dubstep laptop set. She said the house sound wasn't "too bad" . . . . . lol.

So I get there, and their house sound-system had NO SUBS. I mean it was effing bad. Then I plug in to their mixer, and the stereo signal was being compressed and you couldn't even hear much of the drums or anything. There is NOTHING worse than playing Dubstep with no subs. It's blasphemous.

I asked the guitarist of the previous band to use his 600 watt guitar amp to play out of (the system was tht bad), and he let me. So there I was , playing Dubstep on my laptop out of a g'damn 600watt guitar amp. Class A SHIT !! Never again . :u:

2. In college I was playing a big 1,200 people halloween party , and the guys who brought the decks brought ONE Technics 1200, and ONE Newmark piece of SHIT for the DnB room  !!
I told em 2 of em off before I played about how fucked their crew was for doing this, and had a full on brawl before my set. It was really terrible. Arguments and fights before a set are just really bad vibes, and having to balance your mixes between TWO opposite feeling decks (specially a shit Newmark) is just some kind of mind-fuck.

These situations are so rare for me because most promoters and crews know whats up , and have solid sound and Technics / Pioneers to play on..so I can have a laugh at these times . . .

My Advice :
1.Don't play on shit systems, just have a brew and go home.
2. Don't play on a fucked setup, have a brew and go home.

In a dingy club in Soho I got harassed by a group of German students who were asking me repeatedly ALL NIGHT to play a cassette of euro-techno they had brought with them while i was doing a hip hop set, it wouldnt have been so bad but they were the only people there

what deck was it? theres nothing wrong with the higher end direct drive numark decks. ive mixed on so many sets of technics where the plates and pitch sliders are fucked and react completely differently differently to each other. mixing on two different decks should not be an issue for anyone who's played out surely?
