Cheap mastering = not mastering, in most cases. Spend a bit, it's worth it.

If it's already signed then let the label foot the bill.

how does mastering work what exactly do they neeed a finished copy of your beat or do they need every single sound separated as if it were laid out on cool edit and pro tools

We need the final stereo Wave audio file of your mixdown.

With all "loudness maximizing" etc taken off, headroom is nice too

I use FunkVault Mastering (glen@funkvaultmastering.com)

he has done stuff for the Prodigy, UNKLE, White Lies and heaps of Breakbeat & Dubstep stuff!)
he is also endorsed by Prism Sound (the main A/D D/A converter company) and Crane Song (who make high end compressors etc!)
Rates are currently £30 a track (£100 for a 4 track EP!) and you get amazing attention to detail and quality but for that little bit less money ;-)
he also offers Stem Mastering/Mixing for £100 a track (includes mix and master!)
