I'm 16 and a begginer, what software?

Post by dubstepgivesmewood » Sun Sep 20, 2009 6:51 pm

Hey, sorry if im like posting this in the wrong place or something but i feel i could really do with some help here.

So basicly, iv'e been fair mad into drum n bass, breakcore, dubstep and all that crazy shit for like a few years and i want to start making my own tunes. I know there's like loads of different programs to use like abletone live and fruity loops. But which one is the best to use for someone starting out like me? Also a link to a torrent would be pretty sweet if possible, im just a kid and so i don't have much moneys and making electronic music should be for everyone, not just for people who can afford to spend like 400 quid on some software!

Also I've got a couple of synthesizers so a midi input is sorted, do i need any other hardware?

Cheers reyt.

beginners and FL studio work well together

keep the pirating on the DL. its not well appreciated here.

but yea good luck...FL is definitely the best to get started on for beats, others might disagree and say this or that...but it will teach you the basics of programming much much quicker than other programs, even with just the demo version

you will need an audio interface/soundcard if you want to make effective use of midi

if you are more into improvisation and midi triggering try ableton

people get :u: over DAWs.. so youtube it up. go to each programs website...etc

thanks a lot man, i downloaded a demo of FL8 and it seemed pretty good. i know pirating is wrong and stuff and i guess its bad for music but it's kind of the only way i will be able to write songs. but fair. i will look into the soundcards.

If you like FL it pays to stick with it :). Well worth getting, FL is one incredible DAW once you start learning more about it, can pretty much do anything. And if you do, don't pay attention to the horde of people going out there and blowing all their cash on the most expensive shit out there just to tell you FL is a "toy", the most expensive stuff out there doesn't do the work for you, if anything it's the same potential, just a different interface.

Ableton Live is pretty awesome too, haven't used it too much myself but i have enjoyed using it when i have and i've heard nothing but great things about it.

Good luck! :D

It doesn't have to be 400 quid to get something good enough to get results, though.
Reaper - free unlimited demo, $60 (< £40) registration fee for non professional users
Orion - $99 (approx £60)
EnergyXT - 59 euros (approx £55)
Budget version of FLStudio - $99, ebnough stuff to start writing tracks on and you can upgrade to the full version when you can afford it.

It's still not cheap, but it's not ridiculous - it's certainly a shitload cheaper than taking up pretty much any instrument, except maybe the kazoo or the tin whistle.

if breakcore's what you're into (and i guess it is by your name and your post) you totally want to be looking mainly at Fruity Loops or Renoise

only saying because I totally want to hear more breakcore/dubstep crossover producers :)

http://www.ableton.com/downloads

i'm a beginner too and seriously think ableton is the easiest to use. do the lessons on the demo and piss about while keeping the info box open to read what your doing and youl get into it fast.

Renoise, do the tutorial pack like.. 3 or 5 times, whatever. Then it's second nature.

Hey Futures, any examples of stuff made with the free portable studio?? It'd be interesting to hear how it compares.
Feedback wanted.

One can get a feel for the audio quality of all the plugins etc by downloading it and putting the pack through its paces.

I spent litrally weeks testing every plugin I could find to collate the best set of plugins possible. My aim was to find the best quality, easy to use plugins out there. The plugins in this pack all do one or two things very well, and can be pushed for artistic use to create sounds more extreme than many other rival plugins. Some of the plugins here are highly rated in the freeware world (like the Kjaerhus Classic series & the Fishfillets plugins).

To be fair, I don't actually use the freeware setup. I do use Reaper, but I also use other plugins I have bought etc. I also have multiple plugins in each effect catagory instead of just one. :D

In my opinion as a long time Reason & Cubase user, the freeware pack stands up against the standard feature set of either mentioned program. In fact, the pack contains effect types that Reason doesn't and can also record audio etc.

If I came from a DJ background and was just getting into production, then Ableton Live would be my first choice of program. Otherwise, I'd grab FL Studio because it's rammed with quality features.

Ultimately, when many of us older producers started out, this kind of thing didn't exist. For production n00bs, this is a very good introduction to the world of audio production. It accurately reflects the prevailing DAW environment and showcases some of the better freeware effects out there. Best of all it's free!

Just download all the demos and try them out. I started with Acid Pro. realised it didnt hold a high opinion on here so tried all the rest, fl studio, reason, renoise. I ended up goin back to Acid because its what felt comfortable with and i produced the best with despite it not being the best out there.

Venetian Snares uses Renoise. It's $85. What more do you want?
