Bits you hate in songs you love

Post by therapist » Sat Oct 10, 2009 12:48 am

How annoying is this, tunes you love as a whole but one bit pisses you right off.

The stupid fucking snare in 2d by skream, the 2nd riff after the drop that comes in on (1:20) on Purple city by Joker.

That one really high-pitched sample in Raver. Makes me think of like chipmunk J-pop. :|

Just listened to 2D for the first time in ages. You're right, that snare is gassssshhh

The vocal sample in vancouver by martyn. It kinds of spoils the track for me.

Not so much a bit i hate in a song i love, but a song i hate in an otherwise perfect back-catalogue... cannot stand new life baby paris by mala.

I don't like this techy-house-breakdown-thing in the 'The Mix' version of Computer Love from Kraftwerk.
I liked it at first though.

The vocals made the tune even better, but that's an opinion too :D

Interesting. I love the vocals in Archangel.

I really rate this tune, but the vocals on this one kill it for me. I love the lazy time-stretching Burial does generally but this is all over the place. It's not even fucking in tune.

And on that 2D snare, I'm trying to figure out what's wrong. Way too loud clearly. But sounds like the envelopes on the hit or the compressor are fucked, makes it seem out of time even though it probably hits on the beat.

Out of interest, what's wrong with a loud snare?
I'm assuming it makes mixing more difficult, but other than that i like to hear a loud snare... gives the music some punch. Take the flip of skream's deep medi release (track entitled Backwards) as an example... the massive snare hits make that track.

I think it's not the loudness of the snares that bothers people (and me), but the fact that the effect that it has (it's bitcrunched) doesn't really fit the tune.
In my opinion that is

the choice of snare can be a maker or breaker

Nah i agree with you nils, that's the exact reason i don't like the snare on 2D.

I just meant in general, is there anything wrong with the snare being too loud? I've seen a few tracks criticised for it on these grounds before. For example... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy2TOdvr8QY

Sorry for sidetracking this thread btw

A good snare can make a track 10 times better, but when it's too loud, I think the snare is too "central", it would get the majority of the attention when you're listening to a track. So it would get annoying.
Like a house/techno/whatever track with the high hats too loud.

Loud snares are sick, Loefahs disco rekah is a good example...
Dark angel, fall from the heavens above, send me an angel to heal my heart from being in love... After all of the love for you, in my life, but it wasn’t good enough for you, I can’t take no more tears from my eyes.... But it wasn’t good enough for you, I can't take no more hurt from that time....

Odd thing to discuss. There are only snares that are not loud enough, the right level, or too loud for the track they're in, surely? I'm just saying the 2D one is shit, if it's sh*t definitely don't make it loud. I think we can all agree on that at least.

The overuse of 'UH HUH' in the Roska remix of Just For You. Grates.
