usb dj controllers

basically, i have so little money at the moment. Im saving for monitors and an audio interface so i really cant spend the kind of money that getting a mixer and two decks. So im thinking of going down the usb route. possibly http://www.numark.com/totalcontrol, if i was using 320 mp3's a good audio interace (is that needed) and good speakers would i get a good sound quality? Would just be using this for close mates party's and generall pissing about for now.

Is there another option i could take?

I would wait mate - instead how about using ableton live to do a live producing set? or use ableton live to DJ.

Don't try any "decks but using a computer" shit. Get decks or decks and a DVS (e.g. serato) if you wanna do that kind of DJing... seriously.

If you have a laptop, just grab a nanoKontrol and a nanoPad and hook it up to ableton live. You can set the controllers up to trigger clips/fx/faders/etc. and basically dj or do a live pa. those nanoKontrols are a good way to get started and only cost $60 a piece. Akai has some new ones out that are very similar to the Korg nano's as well.

yeah i completely agree, i got a behringer bcd2000 it was rubbish to be honest and the numark controller is much the same so i took a step up and i got a vestax vci-100 http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR217936 another midi controller and to be honest although build quality was amazing it was built like a tank the build quality was what made me decide between the m-audio 1 and the vestax 1 http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR218677 , it was still much the same - not good. so i stepped up again and got some cd decks and bought some vestax cdx-05's http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR219118
and again they were ok you could mix on them but they were severly lacking somthing despite the price, so i got rid of these after 3 weeks waited a couple more weeks and bought a pair of cdj800 mk2's and they are great, i wish i had just bought them in the first place im still using my 800s and still loving them i would recommend them to anybody specially if you are using 320's. But to be honest i think you would be disapointed with the numark controller hope this has helped you out a bit

the uc33e evolution controller works well for me. compact. cheap. easy.

i've played vinyl since 95. still do.
sometimes i use ableton to dj. i'm not a "fake dj". test me. ha ha ha ha ha.

Stay away from the Behringer brand (breaks down a lot)
I can't vouch for the Numark Omni Control as I owned it as well.

i have just got myself some eks xp5's, and using traktor, can knock the fact there cheap, also plastic, but truely amazing and profecional at work.
i want to carry out using vinyl still now and then but tbh i know ill get eaten alive for this but looking at the facts, analog djing has nothing on digitals advantages, i hated to say it at first but then looked at it realisticly, vinyl is a form of art though, but thats all it tends to be in the advantage sides of it.

theres not tbh a great ammount on the xp series yet on the net/decant videos as i think there a finland company but not to sure, correct me if im wrong. but there sure will be in time to come.

ha i feel like i work for bloody eks promoting there products, but i surely dont i can promise that. just overall im happyily amazed with the fact i can literaly put everything into my rucksack and once getting to the party pull it all out and start up, were others need all sorts of doodar and also get a bad back. another thing is the advantage of being able to buy any wav for say £1, were usualy you pay about £7 for a vinyl and tend to only play one side of it. and thats besides the replacing your ortofons, loss of quality evenctualy within the precious vinyl and many more facts. thought id share a little debate i started wile at it, got some very interesting comments on both sides of vinyl/digital

Like a few people have already mentioned, I'd go for Ableton if you can stretch to it. There are a bunch of midi controllers you could use, depending on budget and how you want to use the application. And yes, a decent soundcard is important - the internal soundcards of most PCs are very poor quality. I'd also recommend switching up to FLAC if you have the hard disk space and if you think you'll ever be playing on a proper rig.

You have to press play at the right time, you have to make sure that it syncs correctly (correct beatgrids), you have to EQ it, there's a lot of factors.

With beatmatching out of the way you can have loads of time to do all kinds of sick mixes.

I've seen kids mess this up. A LOT.

They don't know anything about music.

You have to know what you're doing to DJ. "Fake" or not.

I can do both.

EDIT: And don't forget selection! Selection skill is independent of format or mixing skills.

EDIT2: Hitting play, and then sync generally won't give you a good mix.
