"If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s when Smartbar brings in an English dubstep talent you have to be a damned fool to miss it." -- nick andrews, redthreat.wordpress.com

Part of the small nucleus of South London dubstep innovators, Distance aka Greg Sanders--as a producer, DJ and label owner--helped lay the genre's foundations and continues to develop what it will become. Sander's 2004 single on the definitive Hotflush label was followed by 12"s releases--often split with Skream--on the Tectonic, Ringo and Planet Mu labels. This early output found radio support from the legendary John Peel and led to Sander's inclusion in the seminal 2006 Dubstep Warz show on Mary Anne Hobbes' Radio 1 program. While recognition from the BBC marked the genre's official arrival, Sanders proved his mettle: DJing the UKs biggest dubstep nights (DMZ, FWD and Exodus), launching the Chestplate imprint and forging his anthem "Night Vision" into the "My Demons" album for Planet Mu in early 2007. By 2008, the UK sound's creative ripples and commercial explosion across the rest of the globe fueled extensive touring for Sanders. But even as his output of dancefloor hits on Chestplate continued to darken, few were prepared for the reverberating urban decay of the second Distance long player for Planet MU, "Repercussions". While his compatriots grabbed for pop diva's and hype-machine fame, the album's dub-nod introspection and sludge metal inversions garnered praise from experimental circles, with Ben Donnelly of Dusted Magazine calling it: "Repercussions staggers off down its dark alley, dreaded in every sense of the word...letting his grindcore collection get subliminal." However, Sander's latest singles "Choke Hold",a collaboration with Benga, and the just released "Twilight" (listen above) reaffirm Distance on the dancefloor--the latter coming back full circle to his roots in break-step.

>JEFF PIETRO
Jeff Pietro has an interest in the avant-garde and all things subversive. His sets look to the future while being influenced by the music of the past, focusing on dynamism and recontextualization, while his productions highlight a willingness to eschew genre conventions in favor of stressing arrangements and forward-thinking sound design. Jeff continues to work on textural music on Vermilion--his shared label with David Siska--while his talents as a DJ have led to opening slots for the likes of Drumcell, Convextion, Tim Exile, 2562 and Kode9.
