Hihats- Triplet or Straight?

Post by hurlingdervish » Fri Oct 16, 2009 9:11 pm

a third option "both" "depends" defeats the purpose...
if you use both then go with triplets

so what is it?

really depends on the tune... the dubby tracks are usually triplets, to break the monotony of the kick, that is often held in 4/4. (the snare breaks it too of course)

Totally depends on the tune. ,but for me 70% of the time i end up using straight but using a LOT of swing.

I have always used straight 16ths but atmo I am all about the triplets. I probably only have one tune out there with a triplet groove but it won't be the only one for long. There is just a lot more triplet groove shit out there right now that I like than every before. It seemed like a few years ago there was hardly anything like that coming out. Personally I don't really like swing in dance tunes or better put, dj tunes, so hard to find shit that blends together like that.

I just put them in where they sound good, I don't intentionally go for triplets or otherwise.

How does that work? You have make a decision to set your grid or quantization to one or the other there by making that your intention. Or do you just throw everything together Burial style?

I never have quantization on.

Straight definately, but usually with quite a heavy swing, especially if it's one of my more 2 step things. I think people have been lying on the voting though, I hardly ever hear tracks with triplets on the hats yet that is winning by almost twice as many votes.

Maybe people are getting confused between triplets and swing?

I agree. seems strange as i rarely hear triplet quantised tunes (12ths instead of 16ths).
