Post by james fox » Fri Oct 30, 2009 4:38 pm

Dunno if you can find it, but Cousin Cockroach stuff was killer. This was one of Dego's side projects. Awesome stuff.
Here, have a free tune:

dkdk - future rage (<check for the rip off by Siegalizer beats!)
Seiji - 3dom , Loose Lips, many.
Domu - many many tunes and remixes by him
Bugz in the Attic - more or less everything before their lp AND some tunes in there
Afrospace by Blakai
Artwork - Red (NOT coincidentally a tune that many see as a nice example of how beats and bass could work around that speed!! inspired many styles)
Jazztronik - Samurai
those tunes j da aired by the man Daluq. (<pity it never got released)
Gonky girls by Swell session
Moonstarr, p'taah, king britt early 'garage' influence, cousin cockroach , ig culture, daz-i-kue, alex attias aka Mustang, zed an others
labelwise:
4lux records, bitasweet releases around 2002 - 2005, and generally ..GOYA..
;)

it was nice i remember bass with more drums and groove

mega punchline: 'if it aint broken , fix it '
hahah

I used to play a lot of broken beat (and for my money a lot of what is being referred to as funky is really just broken beat too, but thats another story...).

Jazzanova did some great tracks, Seiji's remix of Boozoo Bajou was a standard in my crate for a long time. John Arnold & Ty - Style & Pattern is ace. Reel People - The Rain is on a more soulful tip. Also Nutmeg - Change, thats a great track too. One of my all time favourites is the Ty remix of Lizz Fields - When I Feel Love.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head, but should give you a few leads.

he did do a broken LP, it was called "Dj Rels", though he didn't do it in london. it was pretty crazy as you'd expect - lots of tributes to afronaught and the like on there. (he flipped the same Weather Report drums that Orin used on Transcend Me. which is a stone cold 2001 classic btw)

Dilla and Madlib were both bumping seiji backstage at the montreux jazz festival in 2003. still can't believe they were fans of this stuff.

some pretty good recommendations here - there's really tons of good ones to check for, i'd recommend stuff like 3dom by seiji or daz's side project Dalunartiks to join the dots w/ "funky". like man says much of it is jazzy. i'll see if i can whittle down a mix for you guys of all the raw dubs.

Bugz remix of Hold It Down was always the coop anthem and there are really so so many i could list. check for the early main squeeze 12"s, they make for interesting listens now. in the early days broken was way more percussive and experimental than the later stuff. you can't go wrong with Visions records or 2000 black either.

you're going to find a lot of it is more jazzy/vocal-led than perhaps you might want when you're used to tough dubstep/funky beats. It's kind of a trade-off you have to live with, although I eventually found myself liking a lot of more vocal/soulful tunes after a few years of buying broken beat.

few bits that haven't beeen mentioned specifically:

Da Lata - Serious (Seiji RMX)
Freeform Five - Electromagnetic (Seiji RMX)
BITA - Zombie
Seiji Remix LP on Bitasweet
Amy Winehorse - In My Bed (Bugz RMX)
Seiji & Spoonface - Yin Yang
Afronaut - Carnaval
Son Of Scientist (IG Culture) - Slide feat. Yungun
Lekan Babola - Asokere (I.G. Culture Mix)
Black By Birth Featuring Ronyx - Get It Right (I.G. Culture Mix)
Daz-I-Kue - Future Warrior RMX
Daz-I-Kue - Bloodfire vol. 1 & 2
Al Da Bubble - Off Da Record
Mark Force - Gypo
Tito Sensai - Shelembeh
Stereotyp - Pon Remote
Stereotyp - Jece Valadão / Uepa
Ku Bo (aka Stereotyp) - Kaggua / Lem Lem
I-Wolf - Fallin (Stereotyp RMX)
Nutmeg (Dego 4hero) - Oscar's Shed
Nutmeg - State Of Mind / Bicycle Kick

some of those have tougher beats and slightly less 'soulful' vibes, even if they have vocals. Can't think of any more off the top of my head without going to look through boxes of records.....
