I don't use Reason any more - and this post isn't intended to start a flamefest, although I'm sure there's someone who'd be happy to start one. Just thought this was interesting and wonder why they don't want to call it a DAW? A rose by any other name, blah blah blah.

Sorry, readers.
We have a correction to make. A mea culpa to fess up to. A blogging confession.
Earlier today, we reported on Propellerhead Record, calling it “a new digital audio workstation application” (DAW).
We use the term digital audio workstation, like pretty much the whole world, to refer to “an electronic system designed to record, edit and play back digital audio.”
Propellerheads Software contacted us, though, to ask us to not to refer to Propellerhead Record as a DAW:
"It is NOT a DAW and we’d appreciate it if you didn’t refer to Record as a DAW."
Yep, we told you wrong. So we want to be the first to set the record straight.
Propellerhead Record Is Not A DAW
When Propellerhead explains that Record is an application for recording, arranging and mixing audio, that little lightbulb went off in our minds and we thought “Propellerhead Record = DAW”.
Our bad!
We corrected our previous article on Propellerhead Record to help eliminate any confusion over whether Record is a DAW:
"Propellerhead Software has officially unveiled Record, not a digital audio workstation application, but ” a whole new take on music recording” that “combines effortless recording and a stunning software mixer console with a limitless rack of audio processing gear that builds itself or can be infinitely customized.”
We’re not sure why Propellerhead is sensitive about the “DAW” term, but we figure that the company’s trying to carve out its own space in the marketplace, and not trying to compete feature to feature against DAW’s like Apple’s Logic Pro.
Propellerhead Record will retail for $299. Add in the cost of Propellerhead Reason, and you’re looking at some fairly serious dough to put together a complete Propellerhead-based recording solution – that’s not a DAW – compared to a full-fledged DAW like Apple Logic ($500).
Time will tell if Propellerhead Record can carve out a new place in the market – a place for audio recording and mixing applications that don’t try to compete against full-fledged digital audio workstations.

There's no possible way that "Record" can stand up to DAW's like Cubase, Logic, and Reaper when you get down to the specs and performance. So by making sure nobody refer to it as a DAW they avoid customer and media reviews that would place "Record" at the bottom of the totem poll when they start listing all the things the big named DAW's can do, and all the things "Record" can't.

Absolutely spot on. It is even more apparent now that they are targeting beginners with their software. All these years people have been calling it the Fisher Price of the production world. I guess they aren't far off. No disrespect to Reason users. I was a long time user myself, just sayin'.

I couldn't agree more with those posted comments...IMO the props dropped the ball somewhere between 2.5 and 3.0. Reason plus Record is where Reason should have been in like 2003 maybe 05 at the latest. Now all of us loyal Reason users are expected to buy another product full of limitations, do our best to make new workarounds to try and get Record up to par with the app we had to use all these years to record audio. Oh yeah the props even say it doesent record audio, it records music...because the term audio somehow cheapens the music or something gay like that.
I am honestly sick of trying to fatten up Reasons sound, Record is too little too late, now you want me to use a fucking dongle er excuse me an ignition key. I would have bought Recycle years ago if I knew if it was ever going to get an upgrade, and whos to say all those products wont be dumped like Rebirth... I dident want to turn this post into a rant, I still love Reason for what it is. But the propellerheads have lost me as a future customer. I'm not even willing to pay the $150 for record which includes a free 4.0 upgrade as I am still on 3.0. No no, that money plus what I get for Reason when I sell it is going towards Live. Or more hardware.

I think an old Peter Sellers comedy routine describes this well (for some reason):
Man walks up to woman with dog.
Man says, "Does your dog bite?"
Woman says, "No."
Man attempts to pet dog.
Dog bites man viciously.
Man says, "I thought you said your dog does not bite!"
Woman says, "That is not my dog."
jokes

hahaha I like it.
I dont understand the necessity for a seperate software for audio anyway!!
why didn't they integrate it with a new version of Reason and then they could call it a DAW?
Just in terms of workflow if the the reason arrangement page could handle audio it would be pretty sick. Not that I ever use it or any of the other beginner DAWs or tools.

It IS integrated with Reason though, isn't it? When I did the beta testing, you could use any of the Reason devices in it, and the sequencer does everything the Reason one does and more. If you already own Reason, the price is the same as an upgrade, so it's not really like "buying a separate program." I just saw it as Reason 5.0 with a different marketing scheme. For the record, I really didn't like it, and it pretty much lead me to abandon Reason.

It has some of the same fx and some of the other stuff but I don't believe any of the samplers or synths are included. You have to rewire. People are pissy because instead of just adding these features to Reason they make a whole separate program so you have to pay double. That is already the bullshit thing about Reason. You need an audio editor, recycle and I used either acid or live to stretch beats so you have 4 programs running at once to get the job done. Aaahhh who cares, they are trying to secure their little beginners niche which is fine but where do you go when you are not a beginner anymore? I'll tell you because it happened to me! I had to freakin start all over with another system!

That's why I recommend against reason to the new peoples that are always asking. It's a dead end at this point. Yeah you can learn it, but if you really wanna do this, you're going to have to learn something else in the long run.
It's actually sad to see the company that really was so innovative, and had such a big impact back in the day with rebirth and then reason to so fully loose it's mojo. I guess you gotta pay the pensions and everything, but still, duchebaggery reigns supreme once again.

Good point in 2001 when I started with it. People would laugh now having just the subtractor, rex, nn19 and the shitty fx but it ran fucking great on the slow ass computers we all had at the time. Everything else was a pain in the ass with bouncing and all that and still shit would lock up on you. I made bare tunes with only 256 megs ram. But that was basically the selling point and now that you can pick up 300 dollar lappy's that will run full featured DAW's, there is not much of a selling point anymore. They can sell it on ease of use but really that is just bullshit because of all the creative work arounds that you will not find in the manual no matter how hard you look.

i don't get all this hate towards reason.
i think it's a great program. for me starting out it had everything, synths and fx. having the ability to use all the vsts in the world is a great thing but if you don't know what to go for then it's pretty much useless. reason puts you in the frame of mind that you already have all the tools there so all you need to do is learn how to use them.
again i don't get the whole "if you want to do this serious don't start with reason" mindset as there are plenty of serious professional producers out there who use reason.
i also don't think it's that hard to re-learn a new daw. for all the major daws out there now there are countless resources and it's really been made for the user to learn the ins and outs of the software if they want to.
i doubt many people here would have a use for record but i see other people on other forums, who are most defiantly not beginners, raving about it.
different stroke for different kinds of folks as they say.

Nah man, none of this is true. If you have Reason installed on your computer, you can use any of the devices in Record...no rewiring or anything like that. It's basically just Reason 5 with a different name. And if you own Reason already, the price is the same as a Reason upgrade, and the price of buying both together is the same as what Reason 4 was when it came out from what I remember.

Going into now, though, as a new producer. Are you going to buy reason and record, or logic or cubase? Come on man, get real.

what you're basically implying is that reason/record is not a legitimate music making tool when compared to cubase or logic. that is rather short sighted.
come to think of it i don't think my mpc or machinedrum support plugins either...

Props said it right there, it can't be compared to logic or cubase because it's not a daw.
I wouldn't recommend to a new producer to get an mpc as their daw, or the machine drum for that matter.
