2nd Dubstep/DnB bank for Rob Papen Predator

Post by b_lee » Wed Nov 11, 2009 1:38 pm

Hi guys.

I'm getting started on a new Drum & Bass + Dubstep bank for Predator and would like some suggestions.

I'm the author of the first TeamDNR.net release for Predator and, while it got good reception over on the KVR forums (I post as "Xenos" there), it didn't seem to do all that well here, most likely because the first bank mainly just covered the basics and fundementals.

What type of sounds are you guys interested in? Feel free to post YouTube links and a short description of the sound if you like. General suggestions/requests are welcome, too.

I want to make this second part of the series more hardcore and focus more on atmospheres, special effects and pads.

Thanks a lot, guys. Really gonna have some fun with this synth today :).

Hope this is what you are after
Here are a bunch of tracks with bass sounds you will not find at the moment in Predator. I think they involve the filter + env attack but not sure exactly.

I'm checking those out for you right now, Serox :).

<EDIT> Finished those 3 now. I will be including these in the bank as a bonus (the bank will be a little more than the original 32 preset count).

Anybody got any good NON-BASS preset suggestions? I'm putting plenty of FX and dubby synths in here so that it's useable for both Dubstep and Drum & Bass producers. At this rate, this bank is looking to have a decent amount more than the original 32 presets planned.

Almost done :). Planned to have it out yesterday but had a few setbacks. Chraos, I've got something pretty close to that in here for you. Predator's FX mod slots are your friend when it comes to adding flair to what would otherwise be just another boring squarewave "wah" bass. Routing velocity to the filter envelope's attack speed is another cool tip for these types of sounds.

This bank is already way heavier on basses than I planned on due to the demand for bass sounds on the DogsOnAcid forums, so the rest of my time spent on this bank will be only non-bass material.

Is this gonna be some sort of add on, or a whole new piece of software?

I think that is using some of the same technquies require for the sounds I am after.

Very interested in seeing what is needed with routing!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdvHxx7Ii64 - the pad what comes in at 2:35

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2BEP8E9Q34 - some techy stabs like in that and the pad stab too.

Swear the gezza asked for pads and hits not basslines....

It'll nice to see some non-harsh, non-floaty pads in some banks... I'm talking jungle style pads something what has a lot of character but isn't to busy or bottom heavy! I get bored of making my own, if this bank was full of em I would probably copp predator.

Swear he changed the post after my first post :D

I am itching to see how he made these damn sounds using that VST. I have been on it loads. I seriously mean it, I been sitting there solid playing with that VST and going thru all the different routing you can do. Unless I do things in the right order I am going to just keep going around in circles.

"Routing velocity to the filter envelope's attack speed is another cool tip for these types of sounds."

Where exactly? there are like 3 places you can assign Velocity to the Filters Env attack isnt there?! (bottom left and middle bottom)

Here's what I do:

1. Select "Velocity" for your source in the "Free Modulations" area.
2. Select "Filter Envelope Attack" as the destination for the source.
3. Play with the Destination amount knob and the Filter Envelope attack knob while playing the patch at different velocities until you get what works good to you.
4. I turn the "vel > vol" knob in the Amp section all the way down, that way velocity only effects filter envelope speed.

Now when you play a bass sound, hitting the key softly opens the filter slowly to get that mmwwWWAAAAHH sound, and hitting the key hard slams the filter open instantly ("PAAAAAH"). Playing the patch at different velocities or automating the velocity in your DAW will now get you those alternating wah's and wow's.

For extra flavor, you can apply the filter envelope to, say, a waveshaper parameter in the effects matrix, and the velocity routings will autmoaticly effect that as well!

BTW, for those that missed it, this bank has been released now: http://www.teamdnr.net/products/soundse ... -dubstep-2

There's an audio demo available on the page.

Thanks a lot man! I have been trying to do this for ages. I had everything down with the sound but was not asigning Velocity to the Filter Env Attack so it was not moving right!

I just did this with it within 10 mins :D

I know, who would've thought to check the manufacturer's website. Oh wait, they make you pay for stuff though.
