DIESELBOY
Human Imprint, POTD, http://www.myspace.com/humanimprint // New York City, NY
The most recognized face and sound in American drum & bass belong to Dieselboy. An icon for American d&b for over a decade, he has become an international symbol of this volatile underground dance music movement. America’s best-selling d&b artist by far, Dieselboy was the first American to be voted into the UK-based Drum & Bass Arena Top 10 DJs 2004 online poll. Early in 2007, Dieselboy tag-teamed with d&b’s best-known superstar Goldie in Russia where they co-headlined a festival attended by over 25,000 junglists, and they shared headliner status again soon after at SXSW 2007 in Austin, Texas. As a DJ, Dieselboy, born Damian Higgins, was an original pioneer in the early ‘90s spreading d&b in North America, first in Pittsburgh, then from Philadelphia, growing in popularity until he was criss-crossing the continent virtually nonstop. His popular mix-tapes and mix-CDs have been the gateway for countless fans to the high energy, futuristic, science fiction sound of d&b. Dieselboy’s style is characterized by flawless execution, meticulous pulse-quickening programming that not only excels at showcasing individual tracks but also creates an intense and epic cinematic atmosphere. Based now in Brooklyn, Dieselboy is the most in-demand American d&b DJ on the international club, rave and festival circuits including the United Kingdom (home of d&b), Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and North and South Americas. Beyond the scene, Dieselboy, sponsored by DC Shoes, has played rock festivals and X-treme sports exhibitions. Few d&b artists can claim as hardcore a global cult following as Dieselboy’s. As a producer, Dieselboy was the first d&b artist to chart a single on Billboard’s dance chart with “Invid” in 2000. In 2002, Dieselboy founded HUMAN, the d&b imprint of respected dynamic electronic dance music label System Recordings which launched in 2000, boasting Dieselboy as its first artist, and where he is still its best-selling artist. In 2003, Dieselboy was honored to be asked by highly respected, globally distributed DJ Magazine to create a mix showcasing American d&b entitled DJ World Series: D & B From The United States. In 2006 Dieselboy presented the first HUMAN IMPRINT compilation, a 2XCD set with a mix by producer/DJ crew Evol Intent of Atlanta and a CD of singles called The HUMAN Resource which debuted at #14 on the Billboard electronic album chart only behind non-dance competition such as Gorillaz, Madonna, Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp, and a Disney remix CD. Born in Florida in 1972 and raised in Colorado with his two sisters by a single mom, young Damian Higgins played drums in his school marching band, and his hobbies included breakdancing, skateboarding, videogames, reading, films and role-playing games. In his senior year of high school he DJ’ed a few dances fading between CDs, tape cassettes and a turntable. As a student at the University of Pittsburgh, Higgins threw house parties where he met two Carnegie Mellon University radio DJs who offered to teach him how to beat-match records at the station. Higgins was soon was playing on their weekly 6 hour-long radio show. In 1994, on borrowed turntables, Higgins made a mix-tape calledThe Future Sound of Hardcore and offered it for $5 on rave-related Internet listservs. "Through that, people heard about me and I started getting bookings on the East Coast. It was a very slow process that eventually snowballed into my getting flown various places," which now extend to the six continents with d&b venues. In 1997, Nigel Richards, DJ and owner of 611 Records in Philadelphia, was looking for a roommate, so Higgins moved to Philly, became the d&b buyer for the store, and designed T-shirts and logos for 611. From 1998 to 2004 Dieselboy hosted “Platinum,” a weekly Thursday night event at Philadelphia club Fluid, which gained renown as North America’s premier d&b club night. In 1998, Dieselboy tied with atmospheric d&b legend LTJ Bukem as “Best Drum & Bass DJ” at the Global DJ Mix Awards, also marking the first time an American had been nominated for the award. In 2000, Dieselboy’s track Invid became the first American track ever played at Goldie’s legendary London club, Metalheadz. Each of Dieselboy’s albums has raised the bar for the mix-CD art form. He had the distinction of being the first American invited by British d&b label Suburban Base to make a mix cd of a compilation, Drum & Bass Selection USA (1996). Suburban Base had him follow up with 97 Octane (1997), this time allowing him to submit track suggestions, resulting in a more varied selection. In 1998, Nigel Richards gave Dieselboy full artistic control for his next mix-CD, 611 DJ Mix-Series Vol. One (1998), for which he even did the graphics. Always striving to create something different, in 1998 Dieselboy made a mix-tape called Director’s Cut which he had packaged in film cans, his first experiment in presenting a dance mix in a quasi-cinematic framework. In 1999, on legendary dance music label Moonshine, Dieselboy’s A Soldier's Story was a comment on junglists' (who often called themselves "soldiers") second-class status in the scene, relegated to substandard rooms and sound systems, while house and trance DJs took center stage. It opened with his first original cd “intro” and marked his debut as a producer with Atlantic State, co-produced with Technical Itch (Mark Caro) of Bristol, England. On his next Moonshine mix, System Upgrade (2000), his intro featured a clever sample from the Ghost in the Shell movie. His mix prominently featured emerging American producers Hive and E-Sassin. Later in 2000, Palm Pictures released Dieselboy’s The 6ixth Session, a cyborg-themed mix described by the Washington Post as “hard-edged hyperdriven dance music,” which marked the beginning of Dieselboy’s VIP remix phase. Also for the first time he bundled a second unmixed CD with original tracks. For projectHUMAN (2002), Dieselboy presented a mix framed as a movie trailer, hiring movie trailer voice extraordinaire Don LaFontaine for his intro and outro. projectHUMAN was also Dieselboy’s first foray into massive remix commissioning, most of the tracks featuring American producers remixing UK and other international producers, and vice versa. For his next mix-CD, The Dungeonmaster’s Guide (2004), Dieselboy asked Peter Cullen, well-known for his work as the cartoon voice of the Transformers’ Optimus Prime, to be the voice of the Dungeonmaster who introduces the d&b fantasy and appears throughout the mix to narrate phases of the journey. Again Dieselboy commissioned remixes, this time asking d&b producers from around the world to remix tracks by non-d&b dance music luminaries including Tiesto, Sasha, BT and Josh Wink. Dieselboy has played metal concerts with Orgy and Disturbed, and was the only d&b artist invited by rock superstar Moby for his Area2 national tour that also included David Bowie, Busta Rhymes, Blue Man Group, Tiesto, and Digweed. Dieselboy has been booked for the second U.S. Virgin Festival at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland in the fall of 2007, where he shares the bill with Smashing Pumpkins, the Police, Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang Clan, Interpol, and Velvet Revolver. Always seeking innovative ways to build bridges within the d&b community, Dieselboy has toured with other DJs such as Technical Itch & Decoder, DJ Rap, DJ Fresh, Bad Company UK, and Hive, expanding exposure for their respective fans as well as creating interesting bills for promoters. In 2000 Dieselboy united with two other North American d&b legends, AK1200 (Dave Minner, Orlando, FL) and Irish ex-pat DJ Dara (Darragh Guilfoyle, New York, NY), to create an annual super-tour, the Planet of the Drums. Dieselboy brings his trademark hard edgy pyrotechnics, Dara a mellower dub/reggae flavored vibe, with AK1200’s arsenal tearing up the space between, but when these three forces of nature tag-team, with MC Messinian (James Fiorella, Philadelphia, PA) hyping the crowd, the combined effect is magical mayhem. 2007 marks POTD’s 8th North American tour, making it the longest running annual electronic dance music tour of any subgenre. The Planet of the Drums proudly claims credit for moving d&b out of the siderooms and onto the main stage. Undeniably one of the world’s great ambassadors of Drum & Bass, continuously pushing the genre beyond its boundaries, Dieselboy is currently at work on his next highly anticipated cross-genre remix extravaganza mix CD, his ninth, entitled Substance D, due out in fall 2007, in conjunction with a HUMAN IMPRINT tour with rotating label artists.

Fabric, Dub Police, SubSoldiers, http://www.myspace.com/caspadubstep // London, United Kingdom
Caspa grew up in West London, and was brought up on a diet of jungle & hiphop. At the time he wasn’t old enough to go to the jungle raves so had to be content with his tape packs of Brockie and Det. When garage emerged he naturally progressed into the sound and started attending garage raves. After an injury which sadly ended his once promising basketball career, he bought his first pair of decks and started DJ’ing. And after receiving a free demo copy of Fruity Loops he started to experiment with the idea of building tracks in a computer program and got his first real taste of music production. Under the name Quiet Storm he made a tune called ‘Bass Bins’, which was picked up by BBC 1xtra’s J Da Flex who showcased on his Underground Knowledge Show in 2003. The next day he received a call from DJ Lombardo (the first resident of FWD) who had just started his label Fragile Beats and spoke with him about a possible release of the track he had heard the night before on radio. Due to unforseen circumstances, the label never blossomed and the track never saw the light of day, but determined not to give up he pursued his ambitions by starting his own label Storming Productions in 2004 and started a weekly radio show on the prolific Rinse FM. With a successful year of working and releasing with artists such as Search & Destroy, Dubchild, Toasty Boy, DJ Narrows and Oris Jay the label was well established as one of the dominating labels of the time. After receiving a demo from Swedish producers L-Wiz, he decided to start a sister label to Storming called Dub Police, this label’s focus was to give platform to up and coming artists and push the newly developing dubstep sound - it was also at this time he had his debut release under the alias of Caspa, after which he had a release on well known dubstep label Tempa (Rubber Chicken), which had been one of the largest tracks of the year and is still regarded by many as an anthem. With a string of succesful releases from artists such as L-Wiz, N-Type, Rusko, The Others and of course his own productions under the Caspa alias, the label began to grow in to one the dominating labels within the newly formed dubstep genre. After a number of highly successful releases and remixes, in October 2007, Caspa along with label artist Rusko, were appraoched by Fabric and asked to mix the 37th installment of the legendary FabricLive series, following on from estalished artists like John Peel, Fabio & Grooverider and DJ Craze. This was the first commercially available dubstep compilation and majorly helped bring the genre into the limelight, and for many listeners, it was the first time they were exposed to the music. In 2008, Caspa joined highly respected artist agency ‘Coda’, this lead to a string of high profile gigs & festival performances such as Glastonbury, Global Gathering, Big Chill and Glade aswell as taking Caspa as far and wide as Israel, New Zealand, America, Canada and all across Europe and the UK. Caspa’s recently started sister label to Dub Police; ‘Sub Soldiers’, was now thriving with two installments of the popular ‘Ave It’ series, amongst other huge tracks to come out of the label. It was also at this time that Caspa & Rusko were approached by Lennie De Ice to remix the foundation setting Jungle anthem ‘We I.E.’ which had been one of Caspa’s all time favourite dance tracks. Straight after, Caspa’s highly successful remix of TC’s drum and bass anthem ‘Where’s My Money’ had become one of the biggest dance tracks globally and had grown into one of the biggest crossover tracks of 2008, propelling dubstep to the masses. Fast forward a year from the release of the FabricLive CD, Caspa and the Dub Police have found their home at Fabric, holding down a bi-monthly night alongside DJ Hype & Pascal’s True Playaz residency at this prestigious nightclub. With an album on the horizon, aswell as other major projects including a mix compilation and a remix for EMI, Caspa shows no signs slowing down, and 2009 is set be the year of the ghost.

DJ FRESH
Breakbeat Kaos, )EI3( , Dogs On Acid, Soundweapon, http://www.myspace.com/freshbadcompany // London, UK
Timeout magazine call him "Uberproducer", Knowledge Magazine voted him "best producer in the world", two years running and refer to him as "a legend", DJ Magazine have said his label Breakbeat Kaos is a "sonic juggernaut" and his website dogsonacid.com has for the last two years been the highest ranking music message board on bigboards.com. Mixmag have said "It is almost impossible to go for thirty minutes on a Drum and Bass dance floor without hearing a DJ Fresh production". Dan began his musical mission at the tender age of 19 when back in 1998 he fronted the hit drum and bass group "Bad Company", NME's "Wu-Tang of Drum and Bass". The first release "The Nine" was voted "best track of all time" by 130,000 members of Drum and Bass arena. Bad Company went on to win virtually every accolade thinkable for a Drum and Bass act and were a phenomenon across the globe. After five years, Dan felt it was time to follow his own path. In 2003, he produced "Mo-Fire" as his final Bad Company outing; the massive hit landed at #22 in the UK national charts. A few months later, Dan produced "Miracles" with Adam F for The Petshop Boys as the lead single for their Greatest Hits album, it reached #4; an almost unprecedented proliferation into the national charts for a genre that is so hi-tech and underground. Dan can also count 12 entries at #1 in the UK dance chart over the last five years, and has yet to release a track that misses #1 on the Drum and Bass chart, compiled for the infamous Radio 1 'Grooverider and Fabio Show'. Perhaps this was one of the reasons Grooverider asked Fresh to produce his as yet unreleased album for Columbia Records. In 2003, Fresh started the label "Breakbeat Kaos" with super-producer Adam F, and immediately signed "Pendulum". Having brought them from their native home of Australia, and resettled them in his London flat. Pendulum were described by Front Magazine as 'The Next Prodigy' and after an incredible escalation of PR and radio hype, they became possibly the biggest phenomenon to grace Drum and Bass since the Nineties. Their album 'Hold Your Colour' was hailed as an instant classic worldwide, and is the first gold album to appear on an independant Drum and Bass label. Fresh himself began working on his own solo outing for Breakbeat Kaos, called "Escape From Planet Monday" and enlisted the help of The Petshop Boys, DJ Shadow, Apollo 440, and even Jeremy Beadle, for an album that Touch Magazine described as "A Triumph", DJ Magazine as "Breathtaking" and HMV as 'Incredible' and "Epic". Fresh from his recent 'Golddust' release, recently licensed by Ministry Of Sound and counted in IDJ's top 5 tunes of 2008, DJ Fresh is currently working on a new as yet untitled album for release in early 2010, of which the first single "Hypercaine" has hit #1 on every chart there is out there. Fresh is also working on his Live "Soundweapon" project featuring MC Ivory, and will be rekindled for it's live performance later next year. Come see why the man known as "the most influential person in Drum and Bass" is called that.

DZ
FIRST EVER GEORGIA APPEARANCE!

Badman Press, Black Acre Records, http://www.myspace.com/theevolvers // San Francisco, CA
Sean Harten, aka DZ, was born in December 1977 in Ottawa, Canada. At the age of 2, his parents would separate and he was placed in his grandmother's care in the small farming community of Russell, Ontario. At the age of 7, his aunt bought him his first cassette tape, Run-DMC's seminal “Raising Hell”, and after continuous listens he searched out his grandmother's vinyl collection, grabbed his fisher-price turntable and began trying to re-create the sounds that he was hearing... In the spring of 1995, he recorded his first demo mixtape under the moniker “Fah-Q”. It was an assortment of old hip hop instrumentals, trip hop singles and various breaks laden with cuts and samples from Eddie Murphy's “Delirious”, Beastie Boys' “License to Ill” & “Paul's Boutique” and the “Star Wars” soundtrack. Armed with 30 copies, he hit every record store, clothing shop and tattoo parlor in the city eager to get some feedback on the mix and a chance to flex on a rig. Within a few days, a local promoter who was given one of the tapes contacted him and booked him to DJ at his Sunday breakbeat night, providing he came up with a better name. After his set he was immediately offered a weekly residency that lasted for almost 2 years at the now legendary and defunct, “The Well”, in the Nation's Capital of Ottawa, Canada, spinning old school hip hop and electro, breaks, hardcore and house. From 1995 to 1998 he performed at numerous shows and raves in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto, and often found himself sharing a stage with a local up and coming jungle/drum and bass DJ, Threesixty. They became very close friends over the years and in the winter of 1998, the pair put together the idea of “Badman Press”, which would be their own record label to release their own music. In early 1999 DZ became a father and DJ'ing & producing took a back seat, but he continued to take the occasional local gig when he could. In 2001, he started producing drum and bass with longtime friend Threesixty, and performed at a handful of events in 2001/02 with the former under the moniker “Badman Press”. In November 2007, DZ performed for the first time in over 4 years, headlining the massive “Dubforms6” dubstep dance in Vancouver alongside DeVille (UK) and Swytch (CAN/US). Since then he has played in numerous Canadian cities including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, Kelowna and Vancouver. In 2008 he toured the US twice, performing in LA, San Diego, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle, Cincinnati, Denver, Chicago and Scranton. A late 2009 US tour is in the discussion stages at the moment, and any booking inquiries should be directed to Surefire Agency. On December 31, 2009, DZ performed alongside Diplo, Jesse Rose, Ghislain Poirier, Plastician, Kromestar, MRK1, Antiserum, Sub Swara and Hookerz & Blow at “Revolution” in San Francisco, playing both the dubstep room and the main room alongside Kromestar and MRK1. Then on January 28th, 2009, he performed alongside Mary-Anne Hobbs in San Francisco as part of her 2 day SF/LA special showcase “West Coast Rocks!” On September 17 2007, Hotflush Recordings released what would be the last record in the “Scuba” series (scuba010) by a then-unknown producer from Canada, DZ, entitled “Slums Dub / Strong on Ya”. Although he was already well known on dubstepforum.com for time due to almost weekly uploads in their 'dubs' forum, it was his remix of Morcheeba's “World Looking In” released by LoDubs Recordings (losbod1208004) and his “Just Rolling / Leviathan ft. Bowzer” released by Black Acre Recordings (acre002) that put his name on the map in the dubstep world. 2008 was a massive year for DZ with no shortage of releases bearing his name, and even though he builds new material incessantly, forever chasing new sounds, arrangements, techniques and styles, he has maintained a core sound that continues to appeal to listeners worldwide. From “the speaker-popping drop of the year” (phonica) on High Deaf's “The Boss” (OffRoad off001), to the “no-nonsense slice of dancehall murder balladry” (forced exposure) of “Old Timers” (Black Acre acre006), down to his “truck-sized steppy 4x4 floor packer” (phonica) remix of Bobby Caldwell's “What You Won't Do For Love” (Slit Jockey sj002), to the 1 selling dubstep track of 2008 on beatport (http://www.beatport.com) in “Down” (True Tiger ttr013), you would be hard-pressed to find a dubstep mix in 2008 without at least one of his tracks on it. Even house DJ's have been playing his releases and dubs, from Diplo naming “Down” his 1 track of the month in XLR8R's October 2008 issue, to Herve playing his remix of Jokers of the Scene's “Baggy Bottom Boys” on his Radio1 Essential Mix, to Jack Beats battering his dub “AWOL” and the hundreds of mixes posted online featuring (and most opening with) his Bobby Caldwell remix. With 2 new labels to showcase not just his sounds but those of other up & coming North American artists as well in "Badman Press" & "Badman Digital", it looks like 2009 is going to be a busy one indeed.
