Sub bass frequency limit???
Hello chaps
Are there any generally accepted rules about the limit how low one should go with their subs??
I've been making a lot of tracks recently on my headphones with serious low pressure, but i'm worried that none of this is going to translate onto anything other than my Ultrasone 750s, which are notorious for their good bass.
What kind of frequencies do most club systems go down to??
Cheers guys

Re: Sub bass frequency limit???
I usually find 30-35hz is a nice cut off point, most half-decent subs go down that well.. but I personally do mine at around 60-70hz so people with fairly shit systems can still hear the bass and it sounds nice on some bins

oh shit i didnt get the topic of it sorry. thought it was about how high it can go

Re: Sub bass frequency limit???
what it comes down to is that you kinda just have to listen to a lot of systems and a lot of music and just see what works and what doesn't. i'd agree with legendary.. 30 starts to get out of the range that most setups can faithfully reproduce, but some go plenty lower... you just gotta know what kind of system your stuff will be spun on
Re: Sub bass frequency limit???
Indeed but the arguement I have with people a lot is...Music won't only be played at clubs, you gotta satisfy the headphone and bedroom DJ gang I think it'll be selfish to have a sub so low that people are only feeling the air coming out of their woofer haha.. Like I said I usually go around 60-70 and if you messure on a nice analyser on most big tunes, they run from about 40-70.. Even the really deep tunes.. Its just about having a nice mix really and remembering not everyone is going to be played at clubsnarcissus wrote:what it comes down to is that you kinda just have to listen to a lot of systems and a lot of music and just see what works and what doesn't. i'd agree with legendary.. 30 starts to get out of the range that most setups can faithfully reproduce, but some go plenty lower... you just gotta know what kind of system your stuff will be spun on

Afterall, sub bass is only what.. 179hz (if you don't count 1-20hz) theres a lot of other hz to worry about filling

Re: Sub bass frequency limit???
for sure... i'm not sure what the OP's target audience is, but it's important to know it when you're making the music. and you're right, often the feeling of "deepness" doesn't come from extremely low frequencies, but other aspects of the music.. 60-70 is plenty low enough to feel some good bass.

darn it. i need to decide on a target audience! so much for the hifi/headphones/plasticpeople killer formula.
cheers for the tips guys

Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Don't cheap headphones have really low bottom end cutoffs and exagerated bass though? Not exactly ideal for measuring bass....Better to try on something like a 2.0 computer speaker system which wont go low at all.
Re: Sub bass frequency limit???
You have to remember that you're not just referencing for listeners with speakers that don't go to low, you're referencing for listeners who have speakers/headphones which have that exaggerated bass too, and you'll want that bass to sound good/be audible in both situations... So referencing on both as well as your monitors is ftwstappard wrote:serox wrote:Listen to ur song on a pair of cheap headphones and see how it sounds!levitate wrote:Hello chaps

Re: Sub bass frequency limit???
there's a pipe organ in new jersey usa, called the atlantic city organ.
it's the biggest in the world, the biggest 2 pipes (the stops) are 64foot tall. and it goes down to 8hz and aparently damages the building.

Re: Sub bass frequency limit???
I think if your levels are fine you don't really need to worry about it. I wouldn't roll it off if that's what you're getting at.

Sick. always wanted to sample a low low pipe organ tone but i dont think it would translate well. some of the sickest bass ever when they hit notes that low (my fave part of church) its like getting hit by a wave of bass. as far as cutting my subs it depends really but on average i cut at 40 and sometimes ill boost at 60 to give it a little extra oomph.
Re: Sub bass frequency limit???
I say round 50 or 60... I keep my the bigger part of my sub-bass between 60 and 85-90 hz... depending on the key of the tune...
I don't really see the point of going anywhere under 60... and either way, I really want to have something in the 60 to 85 hz and I dont think having one sub in that spot, and one, an octave lower (30 to 50) is a very good idea...
or is it? could having a dual sine wave in one octave intervals under 100 hz create phase problems and such?
