The AU Freeware Thread

Post by marshy » Wed Dec 09, 2009 10:02 pm

I'm sure many Mac users are the same as me, hearing about a great piece of 'ware, only to find out it's only in VST format.

Seems nearly impossible to find great AU freeware, so i thought we could share anything we've found. Personally i'm having the most trouble finding formant/vowel filters, as most seem to be put inside instruments. I'm currently using the WOW demo and having to bounce the midi down as audio before the timer runs out. Very annoying as i obviously can't go back to adjust anything once converted.

I'll get the ball rolling.

Both are worth downloading, but the 'Freeware bundle' is what i often use. I recommend using these two together to create pretty nasty basslines.

+chebyshev
a distortion unit which uses various low-order chebyshev polynomials to add even or odd harmonic distortion.

+decimate
bit depth and sample rate reduction for added aliasing and decimation noise. a very noisy plugin.

Share the wealth! :2:

TAL U-No-62 is a great synth, i'm too lazy to find a link right now though.

best ones I've found:

Automat - sick synth with great lfo/envelope assignment possibilities, seriously underated

Roughrider - quite an extreme compressor, lots of character

MonstaChorus

Orca - have to sign up to the fxpansion newsletter, and its very limited in terms of programming sounds, but the sub this is capable of is quite scary sometimes.

Most TAL (togu audio line) stuff, i've used the delay, electro, and the vocoder.

Linplug FreeAlpha - similar synth design to albino but very reduced. really like the filters.

Really good synths and plugins for free from these guys (u had to stop laughing at their website name though! :lol: )

http://kunz.corrupt.ch/

And this is my perticular delay favourite!!!

http://www.lowcoders.fr/

You can get some absurd time signatures syncd with this beast. Sounds great, emulates an old style decimated and filtered delay

Oh... this is a great synth that has been used in a few Commercial records. Thin k timberland used it on one of his on a preset...

KVR search for free Mac plugs

http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php

Make sure you untick VST from the plugin format options, and Mac for the platform options etc etc.

Out to Mr Hyde for chatting 'Air'. Changing platform then being skint. Good planning! :idea:

The links provided in this thread above should hopefully yield what you're looking for?

But I still question why you didn't think of all this in advance...

Or didn't do some elementary searches... (Before or after buying a Mac. You may have found this thread for example...)

Google ---> http://lmgtfy.com/?q=mac+music+freeware

DSF search ---> Mac freeware

Yup, futures_untold is a prick, but I also buy my software despite being severely skint. :L:

(and yes I have nothing better to do then be a c*** to people online :lol: Sometimes it's necessary to release the inner DZA inside. I now feel powerful. You made my day :mrgreen:)

anyone know of any lists floating about on the net that show which plugins have dual (pc + mac) support, or which ones are vst only?? im specifically curious about whether albino 3 can work as an au on a mac or whatever

not really too sure how vsts work in the mac realm as ive been a pc user for the past 10 years and only recently decided to switch over.

There are mac VSTs as well as AUs and RTAS, but pc ones don't work on mac and vice versa.
