a.) that's awesome. it's a lovely lovely lovely tune and always a joy to play out-- it's still an extremely fresh sound in the states.
b.) Resident Advisor took me to task for playing Hyph Mngo, in Sept, at the decibel festival. So that's... entertaining.

Good tune, not bordering on hysteria though. Are they taking the piss there?
Hysteria among writers maybe.

this tune's in the top 20 on nearly every dance/underground chart going, but according to you its taking the piss right? why can't you be happy with someone else's good fortune?RealityHz wrote:Good tune, not bordering on hysteria though. Are they taking the piss there?

Big up Joy Orb.
Re: Joy Orbison takes #1 tune of 2009 on Resident Advisor!
I asked if they(Resident Advisor) were taking the piss, but context would be lost on you wouldn't it?
Not being on the list, or being number 1, or being a good tune... saying it was bordering on hysteria... are they taking the piss with that comment? I was saying that it seems that bloggers are the ones hysterical over the release. As has been stated time and again on this forum for a bit now, it's a good tune and probably deserves praise. It's refreshing. Considering how much better the flip of the release was I just don't think it's the #1 tune on my list. God forbid I discuss that on a public forum. Honestly both tunes would be in my top 20 this year.
Was I hysterical over them? No.
Was the public? No.
Were the bloggers? Writers? Snobs? Yes they were hysterical.
I can take issue with the type and amount of praise heaped upon a release and not bash the release itself. As they say in congress, I can walk and chew gum at the same time. And if you didn't want anyone to discuss the topic maybe you should have posted and then locked the thread. Otherwise quit crying when people discuss things on a discussion board eh?

But you've got to realise that Joy Orbison (along with Joker, Gemmy and other producers adding quote-unquote "colour" to the scene) have got an innate advantage with this crowd. Critics write about music at home while listening to it on headphones or speakers. Subsequently, stuff with melodic mid-range and high end is naturally going to go over better than dark thundering bass that doesn't translate well to personal listening. I've been listening to Shackleton's 3 EPs for a minute now and can't wait to catch him live because I don't feel I'm truly hearing his music the way it's meant to be heard.
Now this obviously isn't taking away from any of the artists I mentioned (listen to their tunes on a big system and they stand up to pretty much anything) but it DOES give them a bit of a leg up next to tunes that need 40 000 Watts of power to be truly felt, lest their impact be dimmed. This sort of thing is a critical constant, there's always going to be a disconect between those that go to dances and those who stay at home and write about music.
Also, before anyone asks, YES you can definitely appreciate dark/bass only tunes at home. Often times, critics don't though and they certainly don't when the trend-du-jour is something else.

when i first heard hyph mngo i was suprised at how much people (music writers) were going crazy over it. i hardly classify it as dubstep really (my opinion being meaningless). but this tune really grew on me. its simple but it works. and that vocal stab is just the best. big tune. def like wet look better tho (he killed it with the mobb deep sample)

just appreciate the fact that joy orbison has a universal hit on his hands!!! why is that so hard to accept. why can't people be genuinely happy for someone thats achieved the near impossible feat of breaking through on a first release, without equating everything to media hype! sometimes the media gets it right!
