Ableton to CDJs - anyone made the move?

Getting a bit bored a carrying around a laptop and just contemplating switching to cdjs. You know less hassle and you're just have come with some cds and that's it. Need to learn how to use CDJs first of course lol. Anyways anyone made the shift for similar reasons?

Especially if your making tracks..

You want to take a digital copy and compress it even more to a format that goes bad and is outdated?

Just write big tunes on Ableton..

Cause really...

Big TUNES are all that matter... and THAT is what gets you booked for dj gigs.

Anyone able to help me? I wanna get into writing and making my own tunes but can't afford to buy Ableton Live v.7 really @ £299, I've had a look on torrentz etc but can't find anything to download really...anyone else know where I can get a free version... I'm using windows vista 64-bit home premium, quick comp too 4gb ram so yeah any help would be safe

like the guy above said, if you're producing tracks in ableton and then performing those tracks live i don't think there's much point.... but if you're talking about doing DJ sets with other peoples music then maybe it's worth it.

I'd think about one of the many timecode vinyl mediums available now too because they're decent value for money and are a great way of interacting with the audio.

CDs are not something that i would reccomend a s a DJ method though... cold, boring, and hard to get into.

Anyone able to help me? I ... can't afford to buy Ableton Live v.7 really @ £299...

Ableton Intro is the "lite" version of Ableton and is worth every penny. Also, it's only $99US ($139CAD when I bought it!). I DJ using that and a MIDI controller every week and it's suuuuuuuuuuuuuuper smooth. Also, the difference btwn Ableton Live and Ableton Live Intro is quantitative, not qualitative, as they say (ie: you can have a maximum of 8 session rows to each track, etc), so it's not like one sounds like shit while the other sounds awesome. Don't feel like you're shortchanging yourself by going lite.

My friends and I agree that if you're doing a performance (versus being the lounge DJ), there's more showmanship in using CDJs. Also, if people are looking at you the whole time, it looks like you're doing more lol.

I'm definitely getting CDJs some day, just haven't ponied up the dough yet.

I've made the switch to pre-recording all of my mixes and pretending to mix on CDJs. DAT all day long.

I play out vinyl, but recently purchased an 800MK2, as i had a whole bunch of 320mp3's & in the last 6 months had purchased a lot more than i intended.
I found out learning & using the CDJ was easy, if youv'e used tunrtables before the CDJ can give you added expandability in mixing tunes that you dont have on vinyl.
Im a vinyl purist, but i found i was buyin vinyl & the mp3 version too of the same tracks(im stupid, i know i wasted too much money on tunes!) The fact of the matter is carrying a bag full of rekkids does get to me at times. And as stated before playing CDs out you can gauge that the sound is cold & is missing that vinyl warmth i love, the crackles, the hissing sound.

I will say this about an Ableton dj set..
Time and time again I hear vinyl and cd dubstep dj's trainwrecking like a mofo. To me.. That shit is not cool. I would rather hear a boring Ableton set then to hear a train pull up inside the club. The worst is when a dj is trainwrecking and dancing at the same time and they can't even hear that shit clanking. As far as looking cool when your djing. I don't give a shit what your doing as long as the bass is coming out of the system without clanks then everything is gravy. I have yet to find a mixer that can touch the vst eq's, and filters I have loaded on my abelton dj sets. The VST filter's are amazing especially for club use. Try Incorporating some VST's into your dj set to spice it up. The sugar bytes effectrix plugin is amazing and a ton of fun. You could spend hours incorporating that one plug in into your dj set.


P.S. I have mad respect for people who produce big tunes and dj at the same time. It's one or the other for me... Right now.. I'm just producing in Ableton. Got to write those big tunes to get those BIG DJ GIGS!

Yeah I usually have a lot of fx, filters etc to hand when I do an Ableton DJ set. Just felt that hiking around a laptop and controller at times can be a bit of a pain so am open to other options. Really enjoyed my set last night tho.
