Banksy vs. Robbo

Originally seen courtesy of MARE139, Revok recently brought to light what was deemed a gross oversight on the part of Banksy during his latest Regent Canal series of work. The action in question was when Banksy covered up an approximately 25 year old piece done by seminal London graffiti artist Robbo. However, Robbo has since returned to reclaim his place.

Sounds like this may be more than a minor spat - these two have history.

There is more to the beef than appears at first glance. In the 2009 book “London Handstyles”, there is a story from Robbo: 'I was out one night with a load of old writers and got introduced to Banksy. He asked what I wrote and I told him, he cockily replied ''never heard of you'' so I slapped him and said, ''you may not of heard of me but you will never forget me''. The truth in the story is evident in Banky’s very pointed taking out of Robbo’s piece, there is no mere accident in the placing of Banksy’s decorator.

Yeah he's a bit overhyped and stuff but I think he still has some nice things IMHO

By the way who is Robbo and why is he so important that everybody hates Banksy for destroying his piece?

Robbo was one of the first prolific graffiti artists in London in the 80s, his throwups were all over the shop. Also one of the first to paint a whole underground train.

A pioneer on the scene in similar par to blek le rat and the masters from new york.

thought that might provoke someone but it is what i genuinely think. There is nothing good about writing your name on the wall, that just makes you a narcissist. I really don't mind proper arty graffitti, theres some great stuff by where I live, where the council sponsored people to properly draw on some walls. They look great and add to the area. Writing ROBBO is just shit, no matter how you do it.

writing 'New Mazda' on a wall doesn't add anything to the area but no-one kicks off about that

Graffing is 'vandalism' 'against society' 'not helping' yet massive fuck off billboards all over the joint get let off the hook. Apparently money gives you free reign to vandalise anywhere you want

Dude why would Banksy do that? That would be like me going over a NYC legend or something. Just wrong dude.

I imagine it's something he would do if an NYC legend slapped him in the face

He's following the rules by breaking the rules, it's a diss

Edit: big up Robbo though, took it in his stride
