What are Photek ect. up to these days?

Post by -dubson- » Wed Dec 30, 2009 6:42 pm

Considering Autonomic crew, Loefah and so much other stuff take Photek as one of their main influences what are the old jungle crew doing? Are they actually making anything?

I want to hear 2010 Photek!

photek is one person, rupert parkes.

last i heard he was living in LA and making music for movies, etc.

not sure if he still djs/produces dnb.

the last dnb stuff he was doing was with Infiltrata who is now 12th Planet.

cant say any of the post 2000 dnb stuff he did was any where near the brilliance of his metalheadz era stuff.

early photek is pretty much the pinnacle of drum & bass imo.

I think Photek is in the states, possibly writing hip hop and other bits with heads like DJ Craze.

Photek is the one. Got to be as important as anyone else in the progression of the UK scene.

Solaris (2000) was much overlooked (perhaps because of it's departure from his signature Metalheadz style). It had some very luscious and rich house music production. Ahead of it's time?

Also contained some proto dubstep? Half time 140 with emphasis on bass?

i think it got quite a bit of attention. the tune with manos was played alot by house djs.

there just wasn't much dnb on it so the jungle/dnb scenes didn't really care about it.

the album was alright, i wouldn't call it visionary though.

might have to give it another listen...

Just edited my post before I saw yours! I didn't give it much attention when released for the very reason you mentioned (i.e. not much dnb and my musical palette wasn't quite developed enough to fully appreciate the house tunes.....). Checked it out after unearthing it a while back and couldn't believe the depth of some of the tunes on there. Some proper 'soundscapy' stuff, similar to the kind of thing that Roska might produce nowadays?

Can't Come Down is a percy, wish he would make more than soundtracks. That said, the stuff he did for the Animatrix were pretty amazing.

i do love photek but some of the hiphop he did has some of the worst people spitting on it i'd ever heard...far too many great producers who have shit people mc'ing on their tracks, annoying as hell especially when you know they could have anyone they want on there.

Great producer, 'Consciousness' is an legendary tune. I liked some of his house stuff he bought out, had some great production qualities to it, have to dig that Solaris EP out
