external HD: Firewire 800 or 400?

Post by misk » Fri Dec 22, 2006 7:25 pm

hey all, i got $300 for christmas and i want to get an external HD for my powerbook G4. from what i understand, my computer will be able to handle more of an audio load if i get a nice, fast external HD (my internal one is only 4800 rpm!). Im looking into getting a glyph FW800, probably either 120 or 200GB (theres only a $10 difference!).

so ive got $300, but id like to only spend about $200 if i could. im willing to spend the $225 for the FW800 version of the hard drive i want, but, id obviously rather save the money.

my question: is it really worth it to get a firewire 800 external hard drive to keep ALL my files on (the internal HD will be for system files only) or is FW400 a decent enough speed that i wont notice that big of a difference?

thanks for your help.

400 fine for your needs. 800 advantageous when copying a lot of files in a hurry but requires a fw800 port which i don't think you got

cool cool man, thanks for the advice. I ended up getting a fw400. its not a glyph, but i think that glyph is kinda overkill. plus i got a western digital, and it was only $120!

yeah and my Powerbook does have FW 400, otherwise i wouldn't have asked :)
