good to see the grauniad on the ball with this one.

"it evokes images of New Orleans after Katrina"

a slighly over zealous interpretation perhaps. for me this comparison is a little off point and unnecessary.

but overall, pity the word count is so small as Dorian Lynskey seems to be able to right very well. i guess we have to appreciate this belated consideration.

i did however find the below a little laboured:

"What makes Burial seem to owe as much to Joy Division and Brian Eno as it does to pirate radio and dub is a devastating sadness which, depending on your mood, has the power to comfort, unsettle or move you to tears."

Shame on the word limit.

I think its good to get generally positive mainstream press on dubstep. Spreads the virus...

re: joy division - i made a comment in my burial review and a forum post that reminded k-punk of something jon savage once wrote about joy division. that might be where it came from. i've noticed that sometimes ideas from dubstep reviews on blogs etc. get picked up by the newspapers and magazines. they must be doing their research ;)

here's the link: http://k-punk.abstractdynamics.org/archives/007674.html

i'm glad to see this entusiasm in the mainstream media. it's not so bad if the odd detail gets mixed up as long as they try to do the music justice.

isnt this review a bit late?

i think they just mention joy division to lure in rock fans who might otherwise not check for a dubstep/dance album. i dont really get the reference though, unless its just cos JD is sad and burial is sad too. but theyre really diff types of sadness. JD seemed to revel in their sadness to the point of annoying self pity, burial doesnt do that. there is kinda a glimpse of light at the end of tunnel if you listen to the burial album. with JD it was just this pathetic doom and gloom thing all the time where you would want to prob give ian curtis a kick up thee arse if you met him (yeah i know he had some rough things going on in his life but still....)

yo, Joy Division were not all doom & gloom..some of it is very uplifting to me....

have a proper listen to the LP 'closer', like sit down, listen to it on a good system, loud....it blew me away the first time i did this, i had previously discounted them as miserable goths...SO wide of the mark....the production, the playing, and the lyrics are awesome....

yup, a common misconception for sure. they are alright :D

the article was okay i guess. nice that it was in the gaurdian!

never was a huge fan of joy division. was never really into thier studio works so much. kinda gets oversaturated with verb and sounds all muddy. was never really into all that.

but then you got warsaw. and warsaw was raw with it. punk rock. i wish they wouldve continued in that same vein throughout the years. "failures" is a huge tune!

i think one of the main strengths of burial's album is that it can provoke different feelings in different people, or in the same person at different times. so it could remind one person of joy division, while another person might not get this at all
