But that would then make it someone elses sounds!

You need to be a bit more specific bruv, i.e. what are you trying to achieve? Are you talking bass, drums, pads, effects? What DAW are you using?

What effect are you trying to achieve? Influences etc?

Break the question down and you should get the answers you are looking for, or at least pointed in the right direction. Also, don't forget people use plug ins in different ways for different things, its learning to use them in a way that sounds good to you that matters.

personally if you're already using es2 i'd just stick with it and learn it. switching vsts aint gonna make much difference if you dont know how to push what you're using, and there's quite a few amazing producers that use es2

with that said, sometimes we just get on better with different interfaces and the like. i've never used es2 but have used albino, which is a sick synth and also a fairly good starting point. i prefer the albino layout to the predator one, but to each their own.

i dont know your experience with synths, but learning to program them is what it's all about. you gotta trust me with this one, put in the work and it'll make all the difference.

do a search for this free ebook called "how to make a noise" and it'll get you on yr way with synths. make a point to pick a synth plugin and learn it, don't waste your time jumping back and forth. reference the manual (and read that shit several times) so you learn how to translate what the ebook is saying to your particular plugin.

hope this helps

first experiment with programming your synth. learn what all the knobs do, how they change the sound. then play around with automating every bit of your synth. cutoff, reso, lfo sync, pitchbend, automating these simultaneously will let you create wild basslines. then experiment with effects. you can fx the living hell out of your sounds, but my suggestion is to learn to use fx sparingly, because in most cases, a tiny bit of fx sounds way better than a shitload. also get a grip on how resampling works. not everthing has to be done live.

EDIT // sorry, haven't read this:
Iv been producing for years so i know how to use and manipulate sounds well, still learning how to create new sounds
in that case, i suggest you listen to a lot of dubstep and analyze what you're hearing. then simply go and experiment.

Different instruments for different sounds... Every synth, hardware and software, has it's own sound and a unique set of characteristics.

not sure about dream theatre i think they are pretty shit, man that guy is playing some really cheesy shit, just wanking over scales. Obviously can play but i mean turn of the reverb for 1 second and that like delayed pad on EVERYTHING. The final sound however sounds like the bomb.
