is it a good or bad thing to use internet on a computer you use to make music?

ideally its probably better
for 1, it means less distraction from your music when you actually sit down to make a beat. and 2 less chance of viral issues when absent mindedly surfing instead of making afformention beat...

not using studio PC for anything but music means you can also strip down your operating system to the basic requirements to try and squeez out some extra performance.

but i dont think its that important.....

i was completely against it but my desktop/personal pc started acting up and for about 4-5 months now i was using my studio laptop. did run into a couple of viruses here and there from not even doing much other than being online (big reason i hate pc) but now all is back to normal. in my opinion i wouldnt do it from just the risk of something stupid happening. but really if your just going on a couple of websites reading up on stuff i dont think it would be a big deal. i like to treat my studio laptop like a baby so it hurt to be using it for online purposes.

I have always used the internet while producing. Whether it is tracking down a sample or downloading a new plugin or even double check on music theory questions. It can be a distraction sure but that is the way I do it.

opposite for me. if i sit down (or stand up, for that matter) to produce, it means i already have all the samples and plugs that i need to be creative. i never have theory questions.. if i did surf at all, i would just wind up on failblog. if i'm in the zone and the magic's happening, and the mix is popping.. fooling around on the internet's the LAST thing in my mind.

When I am in the flow I ignore the internet although the aim has a tendency to go off when I don't want to talk to anyone haha. I am just not the type to get all prepared and then roll up the sleeves.

No, it's never touched the internet and most networking stuff is removed, onboard LAN & wireless is disabled. I transfer stuff via USB flash drives, they are up to 32/64GB these days so no problem there.
Just how I prefer it, not saying you couldn't do both fine.

It's more than double the power of my main internet/gaming computer, plus the screen is much bigger & nicer so I wanted to keep internet away from it because I was already so tempted into installing games on it.. of course I couldn't hold back from that for long. I've installed a couple of games on it. I just pretend they are for "inspiration".

yeaa i use to be the same before i got the net,but i think since i got the net i get distracted and i think i had better ideas before and i would get into a zone were everything would go together but now i do bits by bits sometime i get so distracted most of these track's become unfinish projects but before i had the net i use to draw up a track with in 6hours then probably finish the the track by one week now its months..

The main reason i was not so sure about having the internet on my work station is was scared about a virus as about 6months ago my computer stuff up and crash and my hard drive stuff up and my computer at the time was only 6months old and everything on the harddrive got swipe so i lost all my track's i made through that time and i also did not have an external harddrive...but now i have an external and i save everything lol some trax i have like 100version's of them saved.

if you're smart, you won't have to worry about viruses ( no warez, kidz). I go on the internet for a little break here and there, and to whine to people about music.
