Has anyone started DJ'ing purely 130?
It's odd to think of how a lot of the releases in the future will probably be funky/126-135 bpm... I know that Deep Medi and Hyperdub are both going to be releasing pure 130 releases. So whos started DJ'ing with all funky beats? And what are your thoughts on the 130 movement?

Re: Has anyone started DJ'ing purely 130?
I've recently started dj'in 128-135bpm stuff...Its mostly been ''crackhouse'' or housey stuff, all thanks to listening to zinc for a few weeks....
I cant get enough of it at the moment, really like starting a set off with some housey stuff, then moving up into some decent dubstep....i always find that when i dj 130 stuff, by the time i come around to mixing dubs in, i'm always more on point...maybe its just a placebo kinda thing, maybe dj'in 130 stuff makes you a better time listener and counter...??

yeah, we've been DJing and writing a lot at 130, but also at 138 (where we used to write), 140 and above too. all about having different phazes in your sets.

I don't really like a lot of the 130 bpm stuff out there. I just don't like it
It would be a sad sad day for me when Deep Medi and/or Hyperdub decide to go 100% 130-ish bpm

Re: Has anyone started DJ'ing purely 130?
I think you're right about that, got a few 130 tracks that have seem to have a different beat to 140. Definitely have to focus more when I'm mixing it, but maybe i'm too used to dj'ing 140 beatsskittlenik wrote:maybe dj'in 130 stuff makes you a better time listener and counter...??

If I'm doing a more Garage based set then I'll normally be playing at around 135 but if it's True Dubstep then i think 130-135 just sounds too slow for a set. if it's just a half time break at 130 then it sounds fine, but for me dubstep is 140 for a reason - perfect amount of space between the downbeat and snare to properly brok out to!

I know what you mean, a producer produces a tune at a certain tempo for a reason!my name is not billy wrote:If I'm doing a more Garage based set then I'll normally be playing at around 135 but if it's True Dubstep then i think 130-135 just sounds too slow for a set. if it's just a half time break at 130 then it sounds fine, but for me dubstep is 140 for a reason - perfect amount of space between the downbeat and snare to properly brok out to!

I find starting at 135ish and staying there (or thereabouts) works well. Can pitch up funky/house tracks and pitch down 140 tracks. It means you can have more variety in beat structures, moods etc, than just playing 130 for a couple tunes, pitch up, play a couple 135, pitch up again and finish at 140.

Re: Has anyone started DJ'ing purely 130?
To be honest Dubstep is now only a very very small part of my set.
Usually start at 132 and finish 138. Still get the odd 'step tune in but feel that the creativity that once resided in this scene has moved on to newer things.

130 opens up your sets to many styles of music ,I reckon the predicted "split" in the scene will be about tempo not so much about style.

Re: Has anyone started DJ'ing purely 130?
I think it's easy or comfortable to the ears to pitch up a 132 bpm track to about 138bpm so you can get some proppa step in your set. But the opposite movement (pitching down a track from say 140 to 135 or less) usually doesn't sit well with me.

Re: Has anyone started DJ'ing purely 130?
been playing out a shit-ton of 85-105 material, a wee bit between that and 130, and a healthy amount of 127-135 stuff, on the way up to 140land.
i love it.
though i don't love it any more or less than dubstep a few years back when every release sounded remarkeably different from the others
mixing tempos is just another tool to create variety in a set.
