I don't usually ask things like this...

Post by legend4ry » Tue Feb 09, 2010 7:44 am

Whats the type of hat called in that tune..the one what sounds like "EEEESHT" I have been trying to find some samples of it for ages cause they're something ive wanted to encorpate in my tunes. I can't seem to find any apart from in funk breaks, whats the technical term?

Some samples would be appreciated too :).

Shorten the attack on one of your hats, n maybe time stretch it out a millisecond or two... Use fade out on it to make it end totally smooth... Resample that, n open it + the orignal. Reverse the new one, n turn its wolume down some, layer em on top each other so the sample plays n the tails of the two crossfade each other naturally, get it? Resample that, n thier you go.

But what it really is that a good drummer can strike a hat closed, open it, n close it again to do thier own attack n deacy n shit, get it? Thats why it has a pedal.

Maybe it's a shaker instead of a hihat. I tend to prefer them as they have more white noise on top.

Safe i'll try that.. I have played a bit of drums (just on mates kits) and I always do it on a real kit its like one of my favourite drum sounds, ever ! Been wrecking my head for like 2 months looking for something organic enough sounding without being within a break (can only seem to find it layered over another drum sound)

well it's just a simple open hihat. they added some attack to it to avoid the initial tzing, and it's then choked by a closed hihat. thats what gives it the shhhK. to set this up, check out how choke groups work in your sampler, and make it so that the closed hh chokes the open one. its fun to play with.

If you're looking for samples look for 'pedal hat' dude, they often sound different to open hat because they're not just opened and struck, they're opened then closed afterwards which is what produces the envelope of the sound and the 'pedal hat' samples usually provide that sound.

Isn't that just impeach the pres? I am on laptop speakers so I am not certain but sometimes all you need is the sample. You can try to recreate the the beat and if you are good you might get close but it still isn't the same. If all you want is something similar then by all means give recreation a go but there is a reason certain things have been sampled a million times, it's because there is a little bit of magic in the recording that is just impossible to recreate exactly.

I am sure I have a good copy on the HD if you can't find it.

nah I didn't want the exact sound or whatever, just something simular - I just wasn't sure on what the term was :)!

I guess its my fault for listening to hiphop 90% of the time I get acustomed to wanting to use X sound.

I don't know if I would say I have raped it. I think I used it on one dubstep tune, I can't remember which one now tho but yeah I have raped a few other ones to death and back to life again. The classic breaks are one of the big reasons I got into production and honestly I didn't know when I started that everyone sampled the same shit. The birth of DOA's grid changed all that. All the goods available for all joe shmoze everywhere. I have been doing less break sampling lately but I will never totally quit. I think we should write a jungle tune when I come up to chill in Roch.
