Graduating in June...

Option 1

Do a masters degree in International Business, improving my prospects significantly from a BA in Ancient History, but also getting myself into an extra (minimum) £10,000 debt?

Option 2

Save money, do a ski season, go travelling, then try get a job?

Ninja opinions? Any of you done/doing a masters? I'm just trying to work out if it's worth it.

I'm not doing anything but 2 sounds like a better option.

£10,000 debt is a fair bit and travelling etc sounds more interesting/fun.

either option 1 or preferably get a job, get EXPERIENCE in the career path you want. worth a million times more than extra qualification.

University of Leeds. They have a pretty good business school. Also it's an MSc not an MBA, think you need 5 years work experience or some shit to get on an MBA! Yeh a lot of people are getting masters now because they can't get a real job so it's probably gona be more common.

i cant see the point in doig nit fresh after uni, if im honest. experience > qualifications. the number of times ive been turned down jobs because i dont have the right experience.... admittedly i dont have an MBa or anything, but i currently work with someone who has 2 BAs (1 form oxford, one form somewhere in germany) and 2 Masters (1 form oxford, one from london somehere) and is 28 and doing essentially the same job as me (1 x BA politcs & asia-pacific studies).

my plan from here is: work for next 18months to 2years, get experience in a salaried job (not a sodding £6.50ph temps wage) that give you experience, money to save and a good reference etc. then im going to look at a masters, realistically Leeds (as im here already, big up the LS crew) or SOAS in london, though if i can afford it LSE (want to do an e.asia poltics oriented masters)... want to start 2012... and travel during the summer ebfore it starts..

well, that my 2-3yr plan, whether it works out or not is another story

whos your dad? i studied Chinese there, but then left to do politics & asia-pacific at leeds... maybe the best decision i could have made as leeds has suited me real well, however i would love to get my masters from soas, got alot of respect for the place

got to agree with this...

@ Curse - you say your degree is ancient history - why do you want to go in to internaitonal business? unless your keen on doing a very competitive degree to go into a competitive business world, then i wouldnt spend your time and money on it....

if ancient history holds your interest, follow that... there are careers in that field, and it may be more suited to you....

a qualification is only an asset if its going to take you where you want to go... in my view, a masters should be specialised, gearing you towards a field you want to be in. people employ experts, not jack-of-all-trades....

ah no diea who he is, only really knew the mandems in my department.... Dr Hockx (very tall dutch guy - when sitting down he was taller than me when i was standing up... im 5ft 5'') and Prof. Fuerher (bearded german/austrian/dutch/european).... was there 2004-05, but i never got the hang of academic language learning so i left and moved to china for six months, learnt more chinese though grammatically i got worse... havent spoken any for three years now, really should take it back up
