mysticism vs science
conscious half steppaz or teched out club bangers
which way do you lean ???
please no sitting on the fence...
...I much prefer the mystic aspect of halfstepping, and recently spent a day in the film archives of NZ and the national archives researching old polynesian sounds and found some stuff that'll fuck with everyones heads
not only the sounds but what they mean and where they come from...
...the sound of the nights emerging from the void to slowly become the light of day interspersed with the sounds of war and rebirth, the 13 heavens and 10 underworlds
next step in our evolution is to combine those with some cannibalised staggered half step beats and some spoken word chronicling the creation...
...still definitely feeling a lot of the up beat stuff but I tend to do all my dancing on the inside so it's not like an either or thing it's just a slight leaning in favour of stripped back half time beats

Re: mysticism vs science
You are wrong... I have a third choice.dubmugga wrote:please no sitting on the fence...

Um just kidding I don't really. But seriously tho, isn't the essence of dubstep the balanced combo of dub (spacey bassy earthy rooty mystical vibe) and step (skippy cold futuristic vibe)? The name dubstep says it all. (Its basically the stable, viable, matured descendant of dark garage. That stuff was too steppy to be bearable for long. Too dope. Like candy- really tasty but no substance so you get sick of it after a while.)
Re: mysticism vs science
this is really confused. how can the dub represent earth and space? how can step be skippy (a reference to urban culture's 2step) and cold futurism?Worldy D wrote:But seriously tho, isn't the essence of dubstep the balanced combo of dub (spacey bassy earthy rooty mystical vibe) and step (skippy cold futuristic vibe)?

earth and space. that does sound funny. but cmon you know what is meant. don't think literally. dub is earthy and dub is spacey.
was 2step not cold and futuristic? I thought that was the whole deal. avante garde futuristic riddims meet soulful divas. similar juxtaposition as dubstep. consider south london boroughs - is that not both skippy and coldly futuristic?
how can dubstep be both dubby and steppy? it just is! like, how can you be about soul and jah and also be a souljah? isn't militant dub an oxymoron? maybe, but it exists. e.g. soujahz da wrath remix.

what i mean is which floats your boat more ???
the harder side of vex'd, search&destroy, toasty, boxcutter, darqwan, markone etc true 138 bpm steppers
or the halfstepping likes of DMZ, kode9, scuba, L-wiz etc
one is mystic vibes, the other is breakbeat science
and nah 2step 2me was always kinda light and fluffy more like UK r'n'b

Exactly, this dichotomy has legs and will run.quibbling over abstract adjectives isn't really the way to go is it
my 2 pence, I love basslines, thats why i love dub, dnb, punk an dubstep.
dubstep is dubstep, it matter less on the periphreal(i give up tryin to spell this) sounds
Don't talk to me about soundsystems, I've been to Leeds...

init - basslines is what it's all about. i love both harder, breakier sorts and halfstep. no you can't pirouette to either, but you can bust a skank in whichever way you like (shifting about a bit and raising your cig counts y'kow) - all about finding the rhythm in the spaces/space in the rhythm. jus depends on the tune.minusdegree wrote:my 2 pence, I love basslines, thats why i love dub, it matter less on the periphreal(i give up tryin to spell this) soundsquibbling over abstract adjectives isn't really the way to go is it
and it's ALL about the peripheral...

If I really had to pick, I would say the halfstep style is what floats my boat more, BUT! - thats a really tough question. Like asking which of your children you love more (if you had any). I mean, I first got into dubstep through Toasty's "Like Sun" which got me completely hooked, but after hearing some DMZ, D1, and Skream and the lot, its almost a deeper vibe - which is what I suppose I am afer.dubmugga wrote:what i mean is which floats your boat more ???
I like Distance and Toasty and all the others though too. Its a different vibe, but in a very similar format which are both relatively new to me, so I think the ideal mix for me to listen to would be 70% halfstep/30% harder stuff. Kind of like a good strain thats 70/30 sativa/indica. But like stains, you need variety, so I also like to mix it up a bit by listening to all of the spectrum. so there!
