UK: Lib Dems promoting censorship

Post by alphacat » Tue Mar 02, 2010 11:50 pm

http://www.openrightsgroup.org/blog/201 ... b-blocking

Lib Dem peers are seeking to amend the Digital Economy Bill to allow site blocking for copyright infringement. This could lead to unwanted blocking of sites accused of copyright infringement, including sites like Youtube, and a massive chilling effect as any site with user generated content could easily fall foul of provisions like this.

http://www.dubstepforum.com/cyberwar-hy ... 31369.html

that's the advantage of being the kind of tinfoil hat i am, i'm prepared for this since quite a while
meaning i already got to accept it's gonna happen, not that i have a solution
i don't even want a solution, people made this possible, they need to support the consequences while i'll be gardening and having fun at it

Absolutely astounded the Lib Dems are supporting that.

I think I'd better start writing a letter - I'm a fucking member!

I agree in principal with blocking certain websites - for instance it's not right that russian mp3 sites are making big money selling other peoples property with none of the proceeds going to artist or label.

But then I also think the copyright laws need to be re addressed to make a clear distinction in the digital domain between fair "not for profit" use of copyright material and unauthorised use for commercial gain.

Slightly different situation when it's the House of Lords, not Parliament we're talking about... these guys don't need electing!

No... there seems something fishy, but it hasn't captured by imagination enough to get me genuinely angry yet. I have to say, I give "PAEDOPHILE! ATTACK!" stories an instinctively wide berth these days, because I've seen over most of my life (certainly since the late 80s anyway) the public becoming more and more obsessed with crimes against children. Yeah, paedophilia is a horrible crime, but the hysteria has led to such ridiculous public "campaigns" that I find it hard to get on board... there was even a case a few years ago where a Paediatrician's house was burned down by vigilantes. The emotion involved seems to reduce people's appetite for cold hard facts, in favour of the names and addresses of "possible" offenders.

I'm keeping my eye on your thread with more interest than most, but I have to say the last post with the massive list of politicians on the sex offenders register was a bit News Of The World.

I'm writing to the Lib Dems over this because I am a Lib Dem, I've been a paid up member since I was old enough to pay the subs. I feel that they're partly my organisation... if they support things I don't approve of then I tell them without hesitation.

I didn't say I was right about anything, in fact I didn't even say the case or information was false. I said I wasn't fired up enough to get active on it yet. The style it's been presented in by campaigners doesn't resonate very well with me yet.

I'm watching your thread, so if information comes out that fires me up, I'll be more than happy to write a letter.

I don't join campaigns just because people I like are passionate about them.

Edit: And anyway - who are you to make me feel guilty about not supporting one cause? Did you write letters, e-mails and sign petitions about all the many subjects I've brought up on here? Have you been on all the marches I've been on over the last few years? Have you written to your MP 3 times this year already? Probably not... just because you're championing a cause and not everyone else is jumping on, doesn't mean they've rejected it out of hand. There's only so many hours in the day... we all have our own passions, that's the way these things go. If your hard work pays off and something massive gets uncovered, then everyone will back the cause to the hilt...

i just think its much more important to write a letter about hollie greig, than a lib dem policy about censorship, which is completely irrelevant, as already mentioned in this thread, they will never get in power
no matter

This is about Lords, not MPs. Lords don't need a party Government to be in power in order to be influential; they're unelected for a start.... the people proposing this bill *are* in positions of power.

I'm sorry that my priority list is different to yours, but it wouldn't be much fun if we were all exactly as passionate as each other about all the same things. I realise that is your #1 cause at the moment and your passion has made me aware of the scandal, which I probably wouldn't otherwise be.... I can promise you that the moment I feel I should be of help, I will be.

I can go one better than that. I was voted Youth "Chair" of the Weston Super Mare Liberal Democrats despite not actually being a member of the party. Long story. They were angry when they found out and had a re-election.

I've never even voted for them!

i'm sure this guy would save us if this actually ever happened

A SHADOWY group of cyber-activists who succeeded yesterday in jamming key Australian government websites for a second consecutive day warned they could shut down the sites for months.

The group, Anonymous, blocked the main government website www.australia.gov.au and www.aph.gov.au, the Australian parliament's homepage, for a second day running in protest over controversial plans to filter the internet.

Codenamed "Operation: Titstorm", the hacking campaign involves hundreds of people from around the world and used a technique called Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) to jam web traffic, one of the protesters said.

"It is effectively a lot of computers around the world all trying to access the same sites all at once making so that no one can access them," said the activist, who calls himself Coldblood.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

"I believe that the Government websites will remain down as long as we can keep them down. That could be anywhere from a few hours to a few months at the most," he said.

Coldblood, who would reveal only that he was based in Europe, said the campaign would last "as long as the individuals that make up Anonymous decide that action needs to be taken to protect the freedom of the internet."

Anonymous has previously campaigned against the Church of Scientology and helped get information out of Iran during last year's election unrest.

Coldblood said its members wished to "keep the internet a place that is open and available to everyone without censorship".

"Titstorm" follows the Government's announcement in December that it plans to introduce a sweeping national internet filter blocking access to sites featuring material such as rape, drug use, bestiality and child sex abuse.

The hack attack was named after a rumour that images of women with small breasts would be banned as well. According to Crikey.com.au, this rumour is not true.

Close to 1000 people from across the globe were believed to be involved in the campaign, which Coldblood said "allows us to impact something as large as a government with a handful of people.

"Going through the official channels you just get pushed aside, this way they have to listen," he said.

"I believe it won't completely get the government to remove the filter they are planning on, but as long as something changes - for example the list (of banned sites) being made public - we will have succeeded anyway."

Canberra has condemned the cyber-attacks as irresponsible and not a legitimate form of political protest against the filter, which is opposed by internet groups and the pornography industry.

Search engine Google has said it could block harmless material on areas of legitimate debate such as euthanasia, sexuality and terrorism.

Nice, I got involved through the very same organisation. Every year when my subscription comes up, I think about calling it quits, but, despite having a succession of rubbish leaders during my lifetime (with the exception of Kennedy and Ashdown really!) there isn't really another party that I agree with as often as the Lib Dems.

Their main problem is, like me, they're far to wordy when they explain what they think.

Watching Lembit Opik getting belittled over drugs (YOU WANT OUR KIDS TO BE DRUG ADDICTS!!!!!!) by John Sergeant and Jacqui Smith on Question Time a few weeks ago was depressing.
