Whats wrong with just using sub

Post by legend4ry » Sat Mar 13, 2010 3:30 am

for bass these days?

I'm not having a go or anything I am just interested in peoples opinion as to why they always need a mid range bassline as well as a sub.

I personally think that 90% of tunes what have a mid range bass would be 20 times better without it, I like having harmonic warmth from the melody/pads/other weird sounds in my own tunes and from the tunes I buy and play out - this is a common trend.

SO thats my personal opinion, whats yours?

I would like to set people who've only made tunes with mid-range bass a challenge.

Make a tune without one - and post it here, it can be like a minute long - just experiment with filling frequencies with other sounds - its fun!

And for the hell of it, I will make my next tune with a dirty mid range bassline.

I really like tunes with just sub, but I personally think it's harder to do 'well'. As in, if you have a sine then layer it with some mid range bass it is easier to feel like you have a 'complete' track. With just sub you need to do more to add warmth and interest. Plus the i-pod crew miss out haha...

i like sub more than anything... i like it even more with some mid range... mid range to me is all about conveying energy, enthusiasm, boldness... i like to start a track w/ just sub, and get some spiritual vibes and peacefulness.. then when that's run it's course, add in teh mid range bits and set things off. that's just how i like to build tunes. it's all about what you want to express.

agree re just using sub is harder. you're naked out there. If your groove is wack it just shows. always think all that bro stuff is just a flim flam, a shell game. You move the shit around real fast and no one notices that there is no real musical content underneath.

Mhm, seems most people are saying - in a very devious way "I use it cause I can't be bothered to make groove" its a shame yo.

I think tunes with just a sub are a little dry, don't get me wrong some people can use sub bass on its own and it sounds great, I just think it adds some colour when you've got something else going on further up the freq spectrum. I can't imagine making a t une without sub bass but I always layer it on top of everything else. I'd be up for trying a song with no mids though just to see how it goes

I can't write a sequence using sub bass. I only feel it sounds good on root c so I stick to that  Which sucks because it does sound awesome
