im doing video art a college and have been trying to make some visual dubstep:

the video was originally made for a burial track but i liked lycaon tune so much i swapped the audio around.

please comment as all the over videos i post never get feedback.

Was feeling it- got a bit of the look of the original video for Papua New Guinea- until the shooting up scene. I'd forward it onto other forums if it weren't for that- that's not how I want Dubstep perceived by non-initiates. How does Lycon feel about his music being represented that way? Why couldn't they just been skinnying up? Seems more appropriate..... needs more footage & less repetition, anyway.

Out of interest, what kind of visual accompaniment do they have to Dubstep nights in the UK & the rest of the world? All the photos I've seen of FWD>> & DMZ seem either dark or minimally lit.

Exactly how it should be. As for the video its ok, it comes across as a college project. Personally I think the part with the skag taking is too brash and crude. Like Hitchcock, I think its what you dont show that can be more powerful and think this approach would be more suited to the sparse music, of course I am aware that these comments are highly subjective.

I'm just wondering what the aim of the video is, is it a representation of the music, or is the music another tool for you to convey your message or purpose?

hahaha i did kinda feel the shooting up scene might have been one step to fare but then i thought fuck it. i did ask lycon before i started to send it around if he was cool to have his music respecented by heroin addiction and he said it was cool for me to use the track.

for me dubstep is a dark style of music and whats more dark than heroin addiction?

The video was made for my video art course as part of my art foundation and the theme was dark places so I thought I would try and make it as grim as possible.

The thing is with art like this is that I know I can only express my opinion on the matter and I am acutely aware that art is a personal expression so I find passing 'judgement' a cumbersome way of dealing with it. Finding out the artists intentions and preferences is helpful in understanding the work and understanding, not judgement, is what art craves.

I do visuals at dubpressure in brighton but as far as i've experienced dubstep nights seem to avoid lighting/ visuals, which can be a good thing, but i reckon good visuals can really bring something to the night.

theres a quite old video i made on my myspace some of it my own footage some taken from old video art - len lye, maya deren.. but yeah tahts about a year old now so need to get some of my newer stuff up.

dubsteps a lot harder to vj to than other genres mainly because of the slower tempo but also because it lends itself to 'dark' stuff which can come out looking a bit cheesy.[/url]

Yeah I can't imagine lasers at a Dubstep night

and I keep the lighting pretty minimal here too- usually just a couple of intelligent scans, though I put in a couple more for Skream- but no projections there? Most of the dubstep I dig is pretty cinematic, the sound seems ideal for some appropriate video or slides.

I've started working with a Belly-Dancer to perform with my Eastern-themed dubstep sets, she dances with fire poi (chains) & snakes.....

(not at the same time, mind

Id be interested to go to a dubstep night with some visuals and that stuff about the poi sounds fun, but the thing i personally find and also what I really enjoy about the music is that it paints such vivid images in my mind that I dont need anything physical to add to them.

^^^ She's introduced me to the Tribal-fusion & Gothic Belly-Dance movement that's big in the states & is spreading across the globe. This is typically set to IDM and/or Industrial, so Dubstep is not a stretch. One of the principal performers in the style is Rachel Brice (<-movement to Snakecharmer by Kraddy & Bassnectar) and her San-Fran based Indigo Dance Company tours the world. (Check out the NYE '05 clip with music by Amon Tobin in that link!)

Everyone seems to work to a 'visuals basic, soundsystem killer' equation. The sound is king. You don't need distraction at dances as heart-stoppingly good as fwd and dmz. The only downside? Check all the totally dark whoompy footage on youtube...

very interestin mate, the shootin up scene seemed a bit pointless, as everything else was abstract and just kinda environments and scenery, then the only people u see as a specific thing are shootin up, good use of STYLE WARS for the intro....i think maybe that was the most interesting bit. knowing it to be a collage project "dark places" its alot more understandable why u chose what images u did, but i dont think it can really stand by itself as a music video, not tryna say u were tho!
anyway, was interestin and thanks for sharing it mate, definatly gave me some ideas, so i can only big you up for that

out of the vids on there i liked the 'benga electric riot' one most. seeing that old bill car getting speared in the poll tax riots always makes me smile!

I see what folks mean about the shooting up bit, but its not like dubstep = skag heads. I think the music is a good backdrop to showing urban surroundings, after all it does happen and in london too! Generally i thought it was good. it would be good to see a more positive video to reflect the sound a bit more.. like mala says 'meditate in bass weight'. just folks chillin and feelin the sound, the energy it gives, bla bla! top job! x
