I don't know about it being a "good investment".

If you actually want to earn from it you will have to set yourself up with top name gear and be a smart businessman.

If you want to do it more as a hobby then building is definetly the way to go. It will take all your time and money and when its done you will be moving very heavy stuff around for little return...BUT

If you WANT to do it, do it.

You're going to need a BIG, dry, storage space... and a hauling method.

Last year's 12v mobile sound system project, works like a charm on small events! :) Weighs a respectable 70kg but rolls really easy on wheels. Going to built a modular one this year, with tapped horn subwoofer and a top that will be stand-alone also, to carry around for park tings n such

This is exactly what i have in mind, mobile soundsystem max 100kg modular and for start i will power it with small generator. Will consist in 2 subwoofers based on SAL XPRO 30100 witch is 12inch speaker. For low-mids i'll use 2 speakers(one on each channel) of 6" and for the high frequencies i have two awsome bullet tweeters, will start build next month and will keep you updated if you want ;)
