timbaland is a looser?

Post by r33lc4sh » Mon Jan 15, 2007 7:24 pm

"In 2000 the Finnish demoscene musician Janne Suni (also known as 'Tempest') won the Oldskool Music Competition at the Assembly demoparty with his four-channel Amiga .MOD entitled 'Acid Jazzed Evening.' A Commodore 64 musician called 'grg' remade the song on the C64 (using the infamous SID soundchip); it is this that was stolen. The producer's name is Timbaland and he is one of the hottest names in American music these days. The track in question is called 'Do it' and it is featured on the Nelly Furtado album 'Loose' on the Geffen label. Getting nowhere with Geffen, the demoscene has now risen to the aid of Tempest, first by creating a stir at SomethingAwful (files downloadable from the forum), then at Digg.com, then on YouTube, with a video demonstrating the blatant ripoff. Being an online-posting musician myself — what rights do I have if this should ever happen to me, and what can be done to raise awareness about such things?"

Heh, there is another link where he almost straight up uses that track for 'exclusive ringtones' he made. Just throws a beat over it. Great producing...

He's an overrated knobber. Wait until he's 'producing' a new thing he's invented called Dubstep.

utter fraf

he's one of the most important producers in modern music, regardless of the degree to which they were pure innovations, without him things would be very very different, and there would be A LOT of incredible music missing from the picture

maybe this storys true, maybe its haters chatting breeze on the internet, either way i think musically he's a fucking don

I guess I just don't like pop music. If I do chance upon hearing somebody playing any of this stuff, or that Disney stuff, I don't hear innovation, I just hear something 10 or 15 years behind the underground and way, way way overproduced. Sounds like something grown out of a boardroom meeting, rather than from the mind of an artist.

*yawn*

its a shitty album track that needed doing in 15mins, it'll be the most shine this finnish lad will ever get - he should be glad, if he handled it better he might've scored a job off it - n most prob Danjahands built it anyway.

it was a mod file in free circulation - fair game, he shudda got in contact with him first, but thats timbalands lawyers job, not his.

There's a big difference between creatively using a sample, and recording 16 bars of a song, looping it, and spitting some silliness over the top.

The latter occurs with great regularity in commercial hip-hop.

this is a bit of a pointless argument but fuck it

show me the underground precedent for Are You That Somebody, We Need A Resolution, The Rain, Sock It To Me, Get Ur Freak On... the list could go on a lot, lot further

those tunes are unlike anything ive heard from before that, and most of what has come since

perception of soul and spirit is obviously gonna be a subjective thing, but i find his production sound warm and soulful despite its futuristic aesthetic, much more so than most electronic musicians i know of

and more broadly theres blatantly much much more bate sample usage in the underground than mainstream, theres such a dismissive attitude to it, so many false accusations thrown around without any justification

i dont mean to be aggy but its irritating hearing this stuff

Erm, what??? If you choose to disagree with my opinion about it, that's fine. But I have heard lots and lots and lots of this blatant reappropriation in commercial hip-hop with my own ears. To say it's not true doesn't really matter, because I've heard it.

now, I think Timbaland has done some cool stuff in the past, there's no doubt about that, but please don't try to tell me I'm wrong about what I've heard.

(Can't believe I'm arguing about hip-hop on the internetz )

the issue i have is the way its presented, as if its something which is rife in the mainstream but doesnt happen anywhere else. which i believe is very misleading. to my knowledge 'commercial' hip-hop post 97/98 has been dominated by synthesised sounds, and mostly moved away from the sample based approach (which the underground has largely stuck with)

its very easy to say 'well i know what ive heard' and claim victory without further discussion

dont mean to beef it just pisses me off

Timbaland as a producer unbelievable. He should stay away from the mic though. Actually Petridis' review of his album is hilarious and right on the money: http://music.guardian.co.uk/reviews/sto ... 98,00.html

That "Say it Right" tune on the Nelly Furtado album is one of the best pop records this decade, no question.
