What kind of DnB is Silent Killer?

Post by Jongeh » Wed Mar 31, 2010 9:25 pm

Hi, I am new, so I will briefly introduce myself...

I am a huge fan of DnB/Dubstep and I am listening to it most of the time.

I have a load of artists of both DnB and dubstep and I can tell the vague difference between the types of the music. For example, I know you can get jumpup, darkstep etc, but I am still a little confused when it comes to the subject.

Recently I have been listening to alot of the bands signed by ohm resistance, such as silent killer, submerged, breaker etc. What Iwanted to know was what type of DnB is this? I can make distinctions between this type of DnB and others, but I can't tell what this is.

Also, if anyone could point me in the right direction as to where I can find some more sounds like these artists, I will greatly appreciate it.

It will be nice to talk to some people who appreciate this type of music rather than idiots at my school critisising me for listening to it :p

Correct me if I have got anything wrong.

Thanks :)

It's just Darkstep. More of an American style of it.

I guess you should try Current Value,Donny, Lucio De Rimanez, Limewax, Cooh, Counterstrike, Katharsys, Nanotek.

Listen to the Barcode records podcast to hear a lot of this kind of Dnb. It's called the Filthcast. Silent Killer did a mix for it. I think Breaker has as well. So did a bunch of the guys I mentioned above too.

darkstep would be Current Value, Donny, (some) The Outside Agency, Katharsys, Lucio de Rimanez, Kitech, Hostage, Killswitch, etc. also, it's neither neuro-funk coz it's heavier and the emphasis is somehow put on the beat, nor techno dnb coz it's based on clear breaks. the rhythm is fuelled by the kick, so it could not be classified as junglish stuff (old Evol Intent, Hidden, Dylan & B-Key & Limewax)

Silent Killer is just (heavy) drum'n'bass, but as someone pointed out, the sound is characteristic to the American scene. Similar artists: Counterstrike, Evol Intent, Breaker (his bro in arms), Nanotek, SPKTRM, etc

you know, it helps more to think of subgenres of drum'n'bass and jungle, and hopefully dubstep as the labels or at least the main labels. it's like a fractal structure, one label promotes artists with a certain sound, some of these artists develop a new, unique sound and they create another label to promote artists influenced by that sound and so on.

agree to disagree. imho neurofunk is more like dom&roland, ed rush&optical, bse, noisia, phace&misanthrop, calyx&teebee. it's not as dynamic as silent killer and a mere wobblish bass doesn't mean it's neurofunk (maybe neuro, but not really the funk part).

following the same thought pattern.. what "subgenre" of drum'n'bass are EZ Rollers or Bad Company UK? what about Sub Focus or Mistabishi? not to mention Roni Size Reprazent... it's, somehow, _just_ drum'n'bass.

When I said it was more American style Darkstep I kind of meant that it has a lot of the characteristics of darkstep whilst being part of the American hard Dnb scene. It's just got a bit of that style of rhythm in it a bit.
