i MISS OLD DUBSTEP
i MISS OLD DUBSTEP
wah wah wah
But seriously, as well all know, the scene seems to be splitting into two distinct directions; Minimal & Jump-Up/Robotfest/Chainsaw/w.e
Problem is, I'm not really a fan of either extreme. I saw a Doctor P set recently, hated it. Similarly I saw an entirely minimal set around the same time and was also unimpressed, it just lacked the excitement of older nights.
So where do I stand and what sort of nights should I be looking at? Mainly I'm after that darker Dubstep sound, where it's sub-bass heavy but still with tones of mid-range wobble, likes of Coki produce etc., many with some nostalgic grime chucked into the mix as well.

Re: i MISS OLD DUBSTEP
Id say there are plenty of people that still play dubstep in the same style as it was, just new tunes etc.. Distance for example? Keeps it dark and bass heavy but is neither minimal or jump up. Thats what dubstep used to be about it, and still is for me.

Re: i MISS OLD DUBSTEP
everything has just branched out cos of how much the scenes grown. all types of the genre are still there, but just now there so much music and variations its all quite spreadout. Also some sides are gettin more focus then others, i.e. all the extreme jump up.
just listen to what you like i suppose. the raves might be skewed from your personal tastes, but you can always collect/mix the music your into. as much as i like the old sound and how it used to feel, i can still grasp that same excitement from the music today but just with a more refined choice of music. selection is the key, all the music is still out there.

Re: i MISS OLD DUBSTEP
It's all Bass music, the genre has been expanding for dozens of years. You follow whichever path compliments your ears. It will change, but never fade. Bass will be the root.
Re: i MISS OLD DUBSTEP
Just listen to old dubstep. Problem solved
Seriously though I think there is a shit ton of middle ground. For the piles and piles of garbage that is being released on a daily basis I still seem to spend more than I would like to on music that I do enjoy. Dig, dig, dig.

Re: i MISS OLD DUBSTEP
Why do so many people call stuff that isn't wobble, minimal?

Re: i MISS OLD DUBSTEP
I know right? Minimal is thrown around way too often. I don't find hardly any music these days to be minimal. Too hard to do with computers lol. Even minimal techno isn't really all that minimal imo.Motorway to Roswell wrote:Why do so many people call stuff that isn't wobble, minimal?

Finally someone who actually awnsered that poor mans question and gave an example.
First off, I understand your sentiment. I still prefer the tunes in the sort of style that was big when I got into dubstep (2005/006'ish).
Old Planet Mu, DMZ, old tempa & tectonic were the way to go back then. Still love that stuff (though I've embraced other stretches since then as well).
For that kinda sound you should check out sets by :
Youngsta
Hatcha
Distance
N-Type (likes to put quite a lot of "jump-up" in there though)
Tes La Rok (really impressed with his mixes and lvie performance. Not so much a fan of his productions)
Marina Faib (likes what u call minimal as well but she always has a few oldskool dark bangers in there)
Anything DMZ or planet mu before 2008 (not that I dislike their output now, they've just changed styles init)
I think you allready knew all the things I just said but you asked the question anyway, but there is no back I'm afraid mate. All you can do is put up your own night and hope you break even.
