Post by nykx17 » Sun Apr 11, 2010 7:43 am

Do most of you use the drum rack? or impusle or some third party drum machine?

if you're just dropping audio files in the tracks for drum sounds I recommend making sure that you turn the automatic fades (ver8) off in the preferences
otherwise you run the risk of losing the attack on certain drum hits etc and you'll be none the wiser ;)

I use drum rack (its certainly way better than impulse). I usually start with a kit, and then add a bunch of different kicks/snares to it. Then add effects/sound details to the individual instruments in the rack (e.g. drop effect directly on item in drum rack). Then I freeze when I'm done. If I want to use audio samples I would just drop those into the drum rack.

I'm not sure if its easier to use audio tracks for drum sounds - I haven't had a chance to experiment with this yet - so check these other guys methods out too (I'm still a noob 2 lol). If you were just using audio samples you could still drop these into either a drum rack or an instrument rack to keep all the drums together.

Yeah I always just use the arrange view. I just mean like cutting a little section out of a audio file so I can use just a part of the sound. Or chop a little section of audio out of a entire song or anything just to use for some weird glitchy percussion or something.

drum racks all the way, always better to start your drums as midi in ableton cos otherwise there's always going to be some kind of warping involved if your working in just audio from the start.

.... with a different rack for snares, kicks, hats and perc... all grouped. This way you can try out different combinations in clip view before bouncing down to audio in arrangement view, for the further mangling thereof

I dunno if you guys already know about this, but its pretty cool...

http://sonictransfer.com/sonictransfer- ... load.shtml

basically a load of drumracks stacked up so each hit in the main drumrack can be several sounds layered... the manual is pretty good too, and its free! 8)

Im a big advocate of this. I make a new kit about every two weeks and my kits consist of separate racks of Kick, Snare, hats and Percs.... its awesome because its so easy to just load em up and have all your samples ready to go. It creates a much easier work flow as well than using drum rack like its initially intended to be used... i.e. being able to apply effects to each individual sound.

Drum rack gives you so man paramaters to work with, being able to apply effects, eq's and ADSR to every individual sample, and if you group it, being able to really effectively layer.

I think drum rack is a superb machine. ive recently moved to logic, and have started making occasional productions on that... ive found that im most comfortable in Logic when i rewire ableton and use pretty much exclusively the drum rack. I think its one of abletons highlights.

and will be checking out that drumstack!! thanks!

I use the Drum rack....if i need stuff reversed or anything like that I'll drop it into audio and then drop it into the drum rack.....I like to keep everything together and use the Sends and returns in the actual drum rack its self to add SFX to me drums.

I use drum racks mostly. I use audio sometimes, mostly for old school breaks and shit. I like the control you have with drum racks. Setting velocity, envelopes, filters etc. I use the all the features in making a beat. Applying velocity to a filter is one of my favorite things. Use it subtly on say a snare, apply velocity to a low pass filter. Works good on kicks too.

at some point, all my stuff goes through a drum rack, even when cutting up breaks, I will inevitable want to have all that shit at the touch of my fingers on the mpd-24 and jam out a bit to find the appropriate rythm for a track...

I use drum rack as if it were an mpc, and have it midi'd to my mpc2000xl haha. Impulse is ok, but I feel that drum rack is more flexible. There are some things that Impulse can do that drum rack can't though. So I'll do that, freeze and put the audio on a pad in drum rack.
