Basics for laptop DJing?

Post by krusade » Thu Apr 29, 2010 11:01 pm

Basically I want to start learning to DJ, but cant shell out the amounts needed for vinyl or cdj's.

I figured as I have a laptop, Id try just working on the craft that way. What im looking for is a basic but professional standard (and preferably cheap) laptop dj setup.

I know you dont necessarily need anything outside the box, but Id prefer some sort of jogwheel controller for the "feel".

Any reccomendations would be appreciated, im guessing I should start with traktor and some sort of soundcard..

if you need jog wheels, use numark total control + DJ I/O, or just OmniControl // 250e
if you don't need jog wheels, use M-Audio X-Session Pro // 100e

Is there any quality difference in using the board + soundcard, compared to the all in one?

The omni sounds like a nice approach.

All you need to control a laptop djing is a korg nanokontrol dude...

Dont sweat shelling out all the cash on everything until you learn it, man, if you only KNEW the ghetto shit I leanred on, if I were you id either start to get really good with the mouse or drop 50 bucks on a nano to get the job done.

Bells n whistles gear looks cool man, and when your good enough to do it justice it is a very nice thing to have, but DJing is a universal practice. Get a 2 output soundcard so you can monitor, a copy of traktor, and either map a keyboard to play buttons and use your mouse or get soemthing simple with faders n knobs for eq's...

Learn on the bares n youll be AMAZING when youg et on good rigs.

But, another thing to consider, whats recommended above, particularly the numark, though they may be pretty cheap now, consider that numark is launching things like the ns7 at the moment, and this time next year, prices of stuff like the total kontrol and thier cdjs are going to PLUMMET.

By that time, youll have learned all you need about matching and simple mixing using the bare nessesaties that you can jump on that shit for half what youll pay to have it now, when you dont know enough to really USE it to do any more then leanring basic matching.

And bottom line is, not everyone has that ear man... I wanted to know I did before I shelled out.

I understand where your coming from, but instead of buying the korn and the soundcard, wouldnt it just be easier to get the omni? The money spent on the nano and card is going to marginalise the price reduction that the omni will eventually come down to anyway.

No because one day you are going to NEED that soundcard, and the korg is only 45 bucks dude, pocket change compared to the omni now, and with the price fo gear going to shift, you never KNOW what will be in your rpice range a year from now, when youve had time to build a bigger budget (you said your already strapped) and learned the essentials. Witha good interface, in a years time you could have saved up enough for TCV if you go skant on it, I say that with faith because this time next year TCV will be cheaper.

Ive never even taken it out of the box mate. I cant even look at it without feeling cold and empty inside. Im about two steps away from giving it away for fuck all.
