anybody here produce without a computer?

Post by cloak and dagger » Sat May 08, 2010 5:34 pm

Or use one very minimally?

Just curious, really, after two of my three computers died in the same night a few days ago (six and ten years old, so I'm sure Death had been at their door for a while). As someone who's always been reliant upon trial and error and undo functions, I've always respected people that do most of their stuff in hardware, and I've always envied them for not having to deal with computer issues, upgrades, plugin management, etc.

i have before. it's not that much fun. my advice would be to buy and older midi sequencer (like floppy based) try that out for awhile then see why its a pain. or you could have an amiga as a backup like i do which is equally a headache.

Instead you have endlessly-expensive gear (i probably have $1500 in goddamn CABLES here), faulty patch bays, busted cables, endless midi clock issues, dodgy power connections, dirty pots, and the alesis 3630 ;)

w/ that said, i definitely enjoyed my mpc1000 while i had it, but i could work much much faster using logic and an mpd.

this is the 2009 rig which is a little more streamlined now with one 5000 and some different racks , a Machinedrum and new mixing board now as well... sequencing with the Roland MC-50mk-II

running it thru 2 18"s and a JBL speaker set... loud as fuck

I would like to get more hardware. Right now I got a roland mc-307 and a turntable/mixer. I havent really made a real song yet, just make patterns to scratch along to. But yes it is definitely a pain in the ass to use once your used to a DAW.
I have way more respect for artists with a hardware setup.

Playing on hardware is pretty fun, EMX-1, KP3 and Korg R3 is what I got, shame I broke the power button on my R3 and now its lost somewhere in my bedroom.

I used to use an MPC when I first started producing.....That shit would crash too. :u: The Zip discs would fail sometimes. :u:

so basically:  BACKUP YOUR SHIT CONSTANTLY to DIFFERENT DEVICES
If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you're going to see some serious shit.

used to just use the sp404, mpc1000 and alesis micron before. it was fun but i was mainly just doing sampled hip-hop. the micron was also a pain to program. i don't bust out the micron and mpc that much anymore but the sp404 still gets a lot of use.

when i started producing tracks i used a boss dr rhythm, guitar fx pedals and a casio sk1 sampling keyboard with a one second sample memory, an old bass guitar and a tascam four track. needless to say it was shit.
