YOUNGSTA ///

Image
Biography

Without doubt one of the finest DJs in dubstep, Youngsta's flawless mixing and deadly accurate selection place him at the forefront of this evolving scene. Representing flagship label Tempa with an exclusive array of dubplates, his sets continue to raise the bar for quality and innovation. Despite his young age, Youngsta has already attained veteran status in the dubstep scene. Residencies at FWD>> and Rinse FM set him apart as a tastemaker and pioneer, supporting early productions from the likes of El-B, Horsepower, Loefah, Digital Mystickz, Skream, Benga, D1 and Headhunter. More recently, he's been working in the studio alongside Seven, N-Type, Kryptic Minds and Icicle.

Introduced to underground music at an early age, Youngsta began DJing regularly on London pirate Freek FM at 13 playing a mix of bass-heavy 2-step garage. Naturally drawn to the more experimental sounds within the genre, Youngsta was offered the chance to make his name in 2001 with a residency at a new clubnight started by his sister Sarah and business partner Neil Joliffe. Stepping up alongside the likes of Hatcha, Benny Ill, Jay Da Flex and Zed Bias, Youngsta's reputation grew quickly thanks to dynamic sets and immaculate mixing. As the dark swing and nervous shuffle characterised by Horsepower, El-B and Oris Jay gave way to a heavier dubbed-out aesthetic within the dubstep scene, Youngsta was at the helm creating a cavernous and spacious mix with fresh sounds from the likes of Skream, Mala, Loefah and D1. His sets at FWD>> and the early DMZ nights showcased the sound of this new wave of producers and would place him firmly at the forefront as the scene's leading DJ, helping these breakthrough artists and their sound gain further exposure.

Youngsta was asked to present the Dubstep Allstars 2 CD for Tempa in 2005, following Hatcha's first instalment in the ground-breaking series. Built around exclusive dubplates created for only a handful of DJs, the compilation reflects Youngsta's skills both in crafting a mix as well as selecting a sound. It's no surprise he now represents Tempa as A&R and has helped bring attention to the likes of D1, Headhunter, SP:MC and Seven plus others on the label.

Although he's not yet known as a producer, Youngsta's had a strong influence on the progression of the sound known as dubstep so far. Having cut his teeth with a VIP remix of Loefah's "Twisup" in 2005, Youngsta has preferred to focus on DJing before rushing into production himself. More recently, he's linked with Seven and N-Type in the studio and is looking forward to working with the likes of Icicle and SP:MC in the near future.

In addition to working as dubstep buyer for legendary London record store, BM Soho (formerly Blackmarket Records), Youngsta also maintains a weekly radio show on Rinse FM. With his focus clearly on the music, he regularly features guest MCs including former host Task and more recently Toast and SP:MC. In 2008, Youngsta teamed up with station boss Geeneus to mix and compile the "I Love Dubstep" double CD, highlighting the instrumental role of Rinse FM in some of the scene's finest moments to date.

Youngsta has also represented at DMZ in London and appeared regularly at the biggest events, including the "Why Not?" dubstep festival, FWD>> vs. Rinse FM clashes and Exodus in Leeds. As well as frequent visits to Los Angeles and other US cities including San Francisco and New York, Youngsta has touched down in Canada, Japan and Israel and has been playing regularly across Europe since the age of 15. This summer sees Youngsta among the headliners at the Exodus international dubstep festival in Croatia as he continues to spread his wings and take his sound worldwide.

In 2009, Youngsta has several collaborations with Seven due for release starting with "Massai Mara" b/w "The Story" (by Seven & N-Type featuring Youngsta) to appear on N-Type's Wheel & Deal label. These tracks and others, including "Who's There?" also produced alongside Seven, have been causing a massive buzz on Youngsta's Rinse FM show and a single for Tempa from the duo is in the works.

SP:MC ///

Biography

Within the last 5 years, SP:MC has established himself as one of the busiest and most innovative MCs in both drum & bass and dubstep. As well working closely with front-runners DJ Friction, dBridge, Breakage and Youngsta, he holds residencies at leading nights including Shogun Audio, A Bunch of Cuts and Club Autonomic where his passion for music undoubtedly comes through on the mic. With a unique flow and the confidence to leave space for the beats to breathe, it’s clear that SP is an MC who only compliments and never competes with the DJ. He’s also proved to be a talented producer in his own right with recent releases on Tempa (alongside Joker D) and Shogun LTD (with Jubei and Dakuan as Code3). Following up his latest Tempa 12” with another Code3 release (forthcoming on Exit Records) in 2010, SP:MC looks set for yet another big year.

Inspired by the sounds of MC GQ on tapes from seminal raves such as AWOL and Roast, SP:MC first picked up the mic around the age of 16. His first residency came soon after, following a chance meeting at London’s Metalheadz club night with the promoters of a night called Subway. After hearing a demo CD the long-running Chelmsford crew made SP their resident MC, where he would host for often 4-5 hours a night at their monthly events. By consistently impressing both the regular crowds and guest DJs, SP:MC quickly earned a reputation that would lead him on to working with some of the best artists in the scene.

MC GQ made him resident at his own Emcee Monthly Sessions in London and, with his support, SP further raised his profile. After performing once alongside DJ Friction, the pair began to link regularly at Renegade Hardware nights around early 2002. An enduring partnership was born and with electrifying high-energy sets, matched to the venue and the vibe of the night, they’ve made regular appearances for promoters ranging from Hospitality to Valve to Friction’s own Shogun Audio nights in London and Brighton.

Diversity has been the key to SP:MC’s success so far and he has also represented labels including Exit, Commercial Suicide, Prototype, Bassbin, Good Looking, Metalheadz, Quarantine, Digital Soundboy and Soul:r. In 2003, he was nominated for ’Best Breakthrough MC’ at the Knowledge D&B Awards and has since received nominations for ‘Best MC’ from BBC 1Xtra and Drum & Bass Arena; proof that his appeal is wide-ranging and isn’t restricted to any one corner of the scene.

Above all else, SP:MC has a genuine passion for music that shines through whether performing live or in the studio. He first began producing in 2005 and, exercising the same quality control as he does on the mic, has built up a steady catalogue of releases. Collaborations with Breakage (’Shadow’ on Breakage’s debut LP, and ’The Lurgie’ on Shogun Audio) and fellow MC/producer, Verse, (’Surrender’, ’Border Patrol’, and ’Lost Souls’) set the standard, with support from some of drum & bass’ heavy hitters including DJ Friction, Andy C, Goldie and Marcus Intalex. More recently, he’s been working with Jubei and Dakuan as Code3 with releases for Shogun (‘Delta’ b/w Escape Hatch’) and Coded Music (‘Payload’) and singles for Critical and Exit slated for release in the coming year.

With a deep understanding of beats and bass whatever the tempo, SP:MC has also made waves across the dubstep community with two singles for Tempa alongside Joker D, including the massive ‘Trust Nobody.’ There’s more to come in 2010, with dubplate material receiving support from leading selectors including Youngsta and Loefah.

A busy tour schedule has taken SP:MC worldwide in 2009, with appearances in Japan, the USA and Australia & New Zealand among others. In 2010 he’ll be keeping up the pressure no doubt and as MC of choice for DJ Friction, dBridge, Breakage and Youngsta, it’s no surprise that he’s in constant demand when held in such high regard by the DJs he works with.
